Main Olomouc article

[edit]

(Posted at Talk:Olomouc identically:)

The main Olomouc article only very briefly mentions Palacky University, Olomouc the university, in a single sentence. Considering that the lead here suggests that the university is a very significant part of the the town, shouldn't it get a bigger mention in that article? Si Trew (talk) 12:10, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, the University itself makes about 1/3 of the heritage center, which as a whole is the second most valuable in CR (after Prague). Moreover, even despite tourists flooding the town during summer, the 25K less students make huge impact - even the trams, which are normally coupled as double, drive in the summer as solo :)) I will think about implementing it somehow into the Olomouc article. For now there is a lot to work on in this article itself, since there is long way to "A" level :) Cimmerian praetor (talk) 16:58, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Palacký University, OlomoucPalacký University of Olomouc — Ostensibly the correct name of the university? I might have assumed this was uncontroversial, except that it seems so odd that the "correct" title wouldn't have even redirected to the article until two days ago. So, leaving it open in case of objection. Propaniac (talk) 14:31, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would do it myself (basically the article's present content is my work), however as a Wikipedia noob I am happy to contribute with writing and don't really know how to move an article (is it possible to do it without loosing the history of changes, etc.?)
The problem might be, that the University itself often uses Palacký University, Olomouc (see address here, or Palacký University in Olomouc (literal translation from Czech) here. However the official pages don't really take a particular care of the English-language part (apart from faculty of medicine, which has high number of English-native speaking students), so I would still be in favour of the requested move.Cimmerian praetor (talk) 18:48, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Several photos have fisheye

Several photos in this article have fisheye distortion. Photoshop could correct, but new photos would be better. 98.210.208.107 (talk) 09:49, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguate: Armoury, Dissolution, Joseph II, Simple majority.

Do not link Palacký University, Olomouc, it redirects back to this article.

Ref check: Ref 16 and 35 are redirects. Ref 29, 37, 33, 49, 44, 43, 45, 42, 46, 25, 55, 50, 48, 38, 8, 47, 64, 65, 66, 67 and 56 are dead. External links: List of the Rectors, Biomedicine For Regional Development and Human Resources, and Palacký University Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials are dead.

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
"1827 – 1860" should not have any space in between.
Notable alumni section should be in prose. Consider expanding a separate List of Palacký University of Olomouc people.
    Do not link 1770
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    Lead should be referenced.
Most paragraphs do not have in-line citations.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
What's the info on the university's endowment and student government.
The governance section is too detailed. Consider only mentioning important and remarkable facts.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
History section is too long/detailed. Consider condensing it. The university seems to have a very extensive history. Consider copy-pasting history section to History of Palacký University of Olomouc.
See WP:UNIGUIDE. Current article has info on history, campus and alumni but none on academics and research. These two are very important. They need to be included in the article.
You don't need to elaborate much on the types of universities (Governance section). They are trivial to this article.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
Pictures are too big. Do not force image size per MOS.
    Consider finding a larger logo.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
This article has so many concerns that'll take very much time to resolve. I'm speedy failing this nomination. Consider reading WP:UNIGUIDE and looking at featured university articles before renominating. Moray An Par (talk) 15:08, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Palacký University, OlomoucPalacký University – Simply, there is no other Palacký University, so there is no need for further disambiguation. It's true that the "official" name of the university includes the word Olomouc, but the university is near-universally referred to simply as Palacký University, and per the naturalness and conciseness required by our naming criteria that should therefore be the most logical title of our article. As the article titles page says: "For instance, the recognizable, natural, and concise title United Kingdom is preferred over the more precise title United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." The same logic applies here. Jdcooper (talk) 13:25, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page move 11 March 2019

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you moved the article Palacký University to the longer official name. I requested the move last year as I believe the shorter name corresponds better to Wikipedia's naming conventions. My reasons are explained here. Could you clarify how you think my reasoning is wrong? Thanks :) Jdcooper (talk) 19:02, 11 March 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, that's a fair point, and I won't object if you want to undo the move. Sorry for not checking the history first. I prefer the full name in this case because it's not too unwieldy (e.g., no more so than "Massachusetts Institute of Technology"), and it's the name used by almost all the authorities listed on the wikidata page, especially crossref, GRID and Ringgold. I've been using wikidata to clean a list of institution names, and it makes life a lot easier when the sources are all in unison. Cheers, Tamunro (talk) 20:41, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not too bothered either way so I won't try and undo it, especially if there's a technical reason this one is better! Jdcooper (talk) 21:42, 11 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jdcooper: @Tamunro: I would like to copy this discussion to the university talk page, any objections? Then all the discussions about changes of name are in the same place. As the name seems to be stable I will request that category names are updated as well. TSventon (talk) 17:26, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
