Images of Nirvana problem

[edit]

For reasons unknown there is a problem with photos of Nirvana on Wikipedia. The only photo that has been cleared to be on Wikipedia was uploaded in 2005 and its not actually that good of a photo. Its amazing that since 2005 there has been absolutely no other photos of Nirvana to be cleared for use on Wikipedia.--Excel23 (talk) 02:02, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I know. We might as well ask people who have images of them to clear copyright on the images or use a fair use image. Wcamp9 (talk) 00:19, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, this is not the best photo but I found this. Wcamp9 (talk) 23:45, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd call that far worse than the image it replaced. I'm not reverting quite yet, to give others a chance to speak up. CAVincent (talk) 00:33, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Noting that if this image is reverted, the Nirvana discography page should probably be reverted as well. CAVincent (talk) 01:40, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was reverted and I understand that it wasn’t a great image. I still think we should find a better image. The image we have now is objectively better than the one we had then but this image still is terrible. Wcamp9 (talk) 02:24, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we are able to restore that image or put it up for restoration than it might look slightly better depending on how well it ends up looking Wcamp9 (talk) 02:26, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll admit that it is surprising that we don't have a better image. True, we weren't all carrying cameras with super-computers attached in our pockets back then, but surely people took photos. I do think a photo of the band in concert would likely be best. CAVincent (talk) 02:36, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, i think that we may have to find a copyright free image or ask someone who has one to. The best image we have doesn’t even have all 3 band members Wcamp9 (talk) 02:38, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At least it's not in a situation where you're forced to use a non-free image for bands like Joy Division, cause there's no copyright free image. That situation sucks.
Are there really no promo photos that are available (in the clause of Template:PD-US-1978-89}? Feels like we can find a early photo of nirvana, which would be better. Honestly, there might be more luck to try contacting Sub Pop and getting a possible photo licensed 49p (talk) 03:51, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I’ll try it but I really don’t know how to do it or how it will work Wcamp9 (talk) 17:46, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How do you do it and can someone teach me Wcamp9 (talk) 20:59, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Template:PD-US-1989 is just a clause where an image could be in the public domain if the photography has no copyright notice and it was not subsequently renewed. Promo photos rarely put copyright information and were not renewed as well. Examples where band's promo photo are Circle Jerks and Big Black.
The problem of this clause is that the photo must be inbetween "1978 to March 1, 1989". Circle Jerks and Big Black's photo were released in 1987 and 1986 respectively. For Nirvana, there is a very, very small date range of late 1988 to March 1989 where these promo photos could fall in the public domain. Bleach was released in June 1989 and Love Buzz in Nov 1988. A publicity photo could possibly be released to the public during that time. There seems to be early publicity stills like these two images are often claimed to be published in "1989" The only issue is that there's no date on it, so we don't know if it's before March 1989. So there's a slim possibility it could be released in the first three months of 1989, but there's no date listed 49p (talk) 21:40, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fair Use image

[edit]

Can I use a fair use image for Nirvana, as it was a three person band and there is none of three members? Wcamp9 (talk) 17:45, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
