Station's channel number in Morse code
[edit]The second paragraph of the History section states that "...the start of the ticker's cycle was often accompanied by an attention signal, usually the station's channel number in Morse code." I believe the signal is just a series of beeps used to call viewers attention to the crawling information, and not any form of the station's channel number or callsign. If someone has a source for this, please post one.Thomprod (talk) 15:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Seeing no one has added a reference since April 2008, I am removing this clause. --Thomprod (talk) 22:56, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:David Koch, Sunrise.jpg
[edit]The image Image:David Koch, Sunrise.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Citation for September 11th Reference
[edit]I tried, but I'm not sure how to properly format/insert a reference. This link is to a dissertation that should serve as a citation: http//dspace.wrlc.org/dspace/bitstream/1961/4116/1/Michael%20Keefe-Feldman%20Thesis.pdf —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spdracr99 (talk • contribs) 20:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Fake History completely false
[edit]There ain't a single reference for ANYTHING said in the 'history' section. It's a lie. 9/11 didn't mark the start of tickers. Go to youtube and watch the 2000 election cliffhanger, all Fox news, CNN, in 2000, and cnbc in the 90s all had tickers ALL THE TIME. Someone get rif of the whole history section, it is a complete joke.--115.130.8.231 (talk) 05:19, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, but those are not Australian. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:57, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Original research
[edit]I seems to me that most of this article is original research based on what editors have seen, rather than what reliable sources have reported. I think some culling is in order - 114.129.180.236 (talk) 01:33, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
The networks in the US were using tickers on elections nights in the 80s. The article does mention use of tickers on occasions like these. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesallenalexander (talk • contribs) 19:10, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Add user history intro
[edit]The first known use of a ticker to present breaking news took place on Nov. 12, 1982 when San Francisco State University journalism student Greg Cahill used a neglected school computer to report on the selection of Yuri Andropov as the secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The news bulletin was displayed as a ticker on a San Francisco community television program guide. Cahill was awarded an SFSU journalism department citation for his innovative use of the emerging technology. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atomicdog69 (talk • contribs) 00:34, 11 July 2017 (UTC)
Building news tickers - header name change?
[edit]Hello, I came to this site to find out how to build one (hardware side). Building news tickers mislead me a bit. Perhaps a better title is 'News tickers on buildings'? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.94.208.226 (talk) 12:35, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Chyron?
[edit]I've often heard news tickers called a "chyron." (I live in Seattle; it could be a regional thing.) Should this be added to "sometimes called"? I don't know if it's widespread enough to include, but it caused confusion for me. Also a link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_third (redirect for chyron) seems appropriate, since a news ticker is often a Lower Third. (I'd do it but I'm not a regular editor anymore and don't want to ruffle any feathers!) lunaverse (talk) 02:04, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- If you can find a source (which should be easy), of course! I see no issue with it (though don't forget you might have to explain it's a trademark for the Chyron Corporation, thus it might be one of those trademarks the company fights against genericization). Tickers Tick
[edit]The term "ticker" comes from stock tickers. See Ticker Tape. This is unclear and makes the article seem uninformed. 2602:252:D6A:B2C0:E11F:A995:E124:7623 (talk) 15:00, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- Added the etymology...you were correct about this being a massive oversight. Nate • (chatter) 15:42, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
