Did Nathan really persuade Sabbatai Zevi to claim to be a Messiah?

[edit]

According to this article, Nathan of Gaza’s purportedly divine visions, which seem to have reached him as a sort of hallucination brought on by prolonged fasting, inspired him to persuade the bipolar and weak-minded Sabbatai Zevi (1626–1676) to accept the role of a supposed Jewish Messiah. However, the article on that purported Messiah suggests that the older Sabbatai Zevi had already begun proclaiming his divinity as early as 1648, when Nathan would have been only five years old. I'm not sure how to understand this. Nathan's first “vision” happened about 1663, after his marriage, by which time Sabbatai's claims were already more than a decade old. Can someone with some knowledge on this topic clarify this point, please? — Objectivesea (talk) 08:04, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
