Should this article be about the character?
[edit]The corresponding Japanese article is about the character, who has apparently appeared in plenty of other books since 2004; it's likely none of those will ever be published in English and refer to the character as "Mottainai Grandma", but the character is presumably called that in the one JICA-published English text -- what do others think? - If there are sources enough (even if only in Japanese). Other options are focusing on Mottainai Baasan as a series, or even a franchise. Depending on the sources, there could even be a separate article on the character, series, or franchise, while keepin ghtis article focused on the book. It depends on whether someone wants to put in the work. Here are 240 hits at Google News search to sort through if anyone's interested. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 22:56, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Mottainai Grandma → Mottainai Bāsan – I'm not seeing evidence that this book is actually known under its "English title" in English-speaking countries. The English title is actually that of a bilingual Japanese-English edition released in Japan and marketed to Japanese parents who want to teach their kids English, Japanese kids' eikaiwa schools, and perhaps some foreign parents stationed in Japan by their companies, etc. All the English-language secondary sources seem to be based in India and to be talking about the limited release by JICA of a Hindi edition. Additionally, comparing with the ja.wiki article, etc. (see above), I have some serious questions about whether this article should be overhauled to focus on the character or the series, as opposed to the original book, and none of the limited English-language sources that talk about "Mottainai Grandma" appear to be doing that. - Oppose This is the English language Wikipedia and so we prefer the English language form of titles. The work is referred to by this title in a variety of English-language works and so it's fine. Andrew D. (talk) 13:43, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Andrew Davidson: Do you have nothing better to do with your time than troll me in revenge for your not having got your way on the main article from this one was spun out? Your above !vote indicates that either (a) you didn't read my OP rationale, (b) you didn't understand my OP rationale, or (c) you both read and understood what I said (and agree with me -- how could you not) and are just trolling. - Support AD's argument is probably on the contrast of this (which gives 0 hits) with this (which gives lots of hits in multiple reliable sources). But, the argument by nom has been excellent in explaining the scenario. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winged Blades of Godric (talk • contribs)
- Comment—what needs to be sorted out first is the focus of the article: whether it's a book, a series, a character, or a franchise. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 21:01, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Well, when the article's title could only possibly refer to the book (or maybe the character?) we can't really work that out, can we? Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 00:09, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- The argument to keep it at Mottainai Grandma is that the volume was published under that English title. If the article is about the character, series, or franchise, then the argment vanishes, as we don't have sources referring to any of these things as "Mottainai Grandma". - @Curly Turkey: I agree with you it needs to be sorted out, but the "first" part is what I've got a problem with: I think both you and I (and, now, Winged Blades of Godric) agree that whichever option we go with, it's not the one that would involve keeping the current title (yes, the character is probably "Mottainai Grandma", but only in the one book that's kinda-sorta been published in English). So all that's left to do is hash out between us which is best (I honestly don't care: I don't like fictional character articles, but I recognize that Wikipedia has them) and make the change. The change cbn't be made under the current title, and getting consensus against the "book" option first (what this RM will do) might prevent some obstruction during that process (and I think you know what I'm talking about). Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 01:12, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
- Alright, then, I support the move, on the condition that a discussion follows to determine the focus of the article. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 02:57, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Focus of article
[edit]@Curly Turkey: discussion can go here SITH (talk) 16:16, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Okay, then—the article should be as braod as possible, as it's unlikely we'll have enough material for multiple articles, so let's have it focus on the franchise. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 21:36, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
