Name
[edit]All modern biographs spell the name of the French Renaissance poet Mellin de Saint-Gelais (and most of 19th and 20th century biographs too). For instance: Donald Stone, Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. He published "Mellin de Saint-Gelais and literary history" in 1983 and Saint-Gelais' collected works as "Oeuvres poétiques françaises" in two volumes (1993 and 1995). Already his late 19th century German biograph Ernst Winfried Wagner entitled his 1893 doctoral thesis "Mellin de Saint-Gelais; an analysis of literary and linguistic history". You will find rarer the historic spellings Melin and Saint-Gelays. His forename is the French-Norman malapropism of the British wizard Merlin featured in Arthurian legends, by the way. --Bogart99 08:45, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
Life dates
[edit]On April 28, 2006 at 1:15 p.m. (CEST) I wrote an e-mail to the online reference service SINDBAD of Bibliothèque nationale de France with following question:
Madame, Monsieur,
Monsieur Bernard Krespine (Département Littérature et art, Bibliothèque nationale de France) answers on May 3, 2006 at 9:36 a.m. (CEST):
Madame, Monsieur,
Cordialement,
Pour le SINDBAD,
The British Library gives as life dates (1490?-1558), by the way. Nevertheless I decide in favour of the francophile version (born ca. 1491; died October 1558) now. --Bogart99 10:42, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
