The result of the move request was page renamed. Mazel tov on reaching consensus after only three days! —harej (talk) (cool!) 00:57, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mazal tovMazel tov — This page should be moved back to "mazel tov", it is the most common English spelling (Per WP:USEENGLISH), "mazel tov" is found in the dictionary as the primary entry (and the only entry in Merriam-Webster here), whereas "mazal tov" is either not found, or is found as a spelling varient. In addition, it beats 2:1 in Google test. - Epson291 (talk) 15:57, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just as a note, "mazel" is Yiddish, "mazal" is Hebrew" (ancient as well as contemporary). Debresser (talk) 01:17, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using the Black Eyed Peas as a ref?

[edit]

While it's probably correct that this is a well known Yiddish phrase, I've tagged this up as deducing that from a mention in a Black Eyed Peas video borders on WP:OR/WP:SYNTH -- 146.115.187.103 (talk) 02:27, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Compliment

[edit]

I always thought Mazel Tov had a slightly different connotation, that you were acknowledging someone for a good deed. So not just a congratulation, but more a compliment for doing something worthwhile, for being a mensch. Or am I mixing it up with a different phrase? 146.137.70.70 (talk) 14:35, 3 February 2017 (UTC) Ken[reply]

You are mistaken. Debresser (talk) 16:28, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not so sure. Mazel tov is pretty similar to mazette!, which is a surprise exclamation when someone does a memorable, improbable hat trick. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:CB11:13:D700:88BD:FDE9:7977:78D3 (talk) 01:17, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
