14:48, 8 May 2021 (UTC)V.fanis1 (talk)==Conflict of Interest== Vfanis: I think I contributed to this article by taking a neutral point of view, based on an extensive bibliography. I started to get interested in new media art when I was a young student, and I followed almost all the conferences organized by Artmedia (another Wikipedia content to which I contributed), at the University of Salerno, as well as some of the exhibitions of main international artists who participated in Artmedia. Therefore, the only connection with the subject of this and other articles is my cultural interest in new media art and in the work of this and other artists... — Preceding unsigned comment added by V.fanis1 (talk • contribs) 13:05, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- V.fanis1, Please explain how you have access to so many images of the artists' work across such a broad period of time? Also, you have uploaded these images as "own work" which explicitly implies you are the artist. These are protected by copyright, and require permission via OTRS: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS#Licensing_images:_when_do_I_contact_OTRS? Theredproject (talk) 08:24, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- I took all the photos (except 2 and 3) at the exhibitions organized by Artmedia, when I was a student in Naples. While I took photo 2 in Nice (where I was born and lived before moving to Naples) and finally I took photo 3 while participating in the International Media Art Forum for Youth (IMAFY) in 2008. (Véronique)
- (I uploaded these images as "own work" just because I took the photos... is this wrong?) V.fanis1 (talk) 15:49, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- Then these need permission via OTRS. Theredproject (talk) 10:05, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
- Which still doesn't explain how you have images of the artists work that span over a decade, include schematics and graphic mockups, and includes locations in Cairo.Theredproject (talk) 11:00, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
As I have said, I took almost all of these photos (including the one with the interaction scheme) while attending the Artmedia seminars/exhibitions. And I took the photo at the Cairo Art Palace while participating in the International Media Art Forum for Youth (which is followed by many Europeans). Also the two photos which I recently removed were taken at Artmedia (I removed them because, after your remarks, I realized that probably there were too many photos and some of these were not necessary to describe the work). As for the permission via OTRS, this is something that I do not know, I will try to understand what I have to do.....V.fanis1 (talk) 21:55, 7 May 2021 (UTC)
I have tried to understand the copyright problem better, starting from Wikipedia: Image use policy, and these are my conclusions:
“The legal rights for images generally lie with the photographer, not the subject.” However there are significant distinctions to be considered in order to decide which images can be used or not in this case:
- Photo #2 (installation of Sealed Computers in Nice, more than 20 years ago): “Photographs of three-dimensional objects almost always generate a new copyright, though others may continue to hold copyright in items depicted in such photographs” [though only for 20 years in Europe].
- Photo #3 (Cairo Art Palace): “Public domain images are not copyrighted”, but I don't know if the video-projection in the Cairo Art Palace could be considered as “part of a public domain”.... probably not.
- Photo #4 (Museophagia): “Photographs of two-dimensional objects such as paintings often do not create a new copyright”. This means that the photo from this series must be removed.
- Photo #5 (Imola): “Public domain images are not copyrighted, and copyright law does not restrict their use in any way.” This photo was taken in the public domain, “which removes all copyright and licensing restrictions”.
- Photo #6 (Diagram): “Technical data is uncopyrightable, lacking creativity, but the presentation of data in a graph or chart can be copyrighted, so a user-made version should be sufficiently different in presentation from the original to remain free”. This means that the photo of “SMS Mediated Sublime/CIM series interaction structure”, which was presented at Artmedia, must be removed.
- Photo #7 (Democratic Blues): “Photographs of two-dimensional objects such as paintings in a museum often do not create a new copyright”. This means that also the photo from the series “Democratic blues” must be removed.
According to all this, I think I should use only the photos #1, #2, and #5. Of course, before making these corrections, I would like to wait for your feedback. Thank youV.fanis1 (talk) 14:48, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
