Most popular actress in America
[edit][I moved the following message from User:East Side Monk here from my Talk page] -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
I am totally new to Wikipedia edit. Don't know the protocol or much of the process, just trying to help. Any guidance would be appreciated.
(From: Wikipedia- Maude Adams) "Beginning in 1897, Adams starred in plays by J. M. Barrie, including The Little Minister, Quality Street, What Every Woman Knows and Peter Pan. These productions made Adams the most popular actress in New York."
I think it's common knowledge that after Peter Pan, Maude Adams was not just the most popular actress in New York but in the whole country. I just wanted the sentence to reflect that fact.
- On Wikipedia, we depend on citations to WP:Reliable sources. We cannot accept someone's statement that something is "common knowledge". -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:37, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
If you google "Yvonne Shafer", her books will come up, and one of them is the book that I mentioned. I could not find any for sale anywhere, so I just googled the book and it did come up?? Again, it is on page 49 of book.

"There was a simple reason that this philosophical play, set in a barnyard, became the most talked-of theatrical event of the season. It starred Maude Adams, an actress whose reputation and fame in 1911 stretched so far that one critic called her “the most popular person in the United States.”
- What critic? In what publication did the critic write this? When? On what page? What was the title of the piece? -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:37, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
That is definitely open for debate, but the critic was saying that she is not only the most popular actress but the most popular person in the U.S. https://www.sbsun.com/2017/04/24/san-bernardino-opera-house-was-home-to-stars-like-maude-adams/ By THE SUN | thesun@dfmdev.com | April 24, 2017 at 6:48 pm
"One of those performances was at the San Bernardino Opera House on April 19, 1913." "During the days leading up to the big event, the San Bernardino Daily Sun raved about Adams’ upcoming performance:" “Miss Adams has long been recognized as the most popular actress on the American stage. She has a bigger following than any man or woman that has ever graced the boards in this country. It does not seem strange or unwarranted, therefore, that her coming here has been awaited with some suspense, and to venture the assertion that she will be greeted by an audience limited only by the capacity of the theater.”
Just a sampling of the info out. Thanks. East Side Monk (talk) 01:09, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- You could cite the article in The Sun, I think. Please read WP:CITE. Also, please try to keep Talk page comments as concise as possible. -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Movement of Citation.
[edit]"Once while touring, a theater owner significantly raised the price of tickets, knowing Adams's name meant a sold-out house.[31] Adams made the owner refund the difference before she appeared on the stage that night.[citation needed]"
Actually, the second sentence is on that page also. (Robbins p 219) So therefore, the citation "31" should be moved to after the second sentence.
Thanks, East Side Monk (talk) 23:41, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- OK, done. -- Ssilvers (talk) 02:06, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
