[edit]Hingis did not win the "Swiss Sportswoman of the year" award in 1993 but in 1997. Please correct it! 13:08, 2 November 2007
Martina's last name (surname)
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
born as "Martina Hingisová Molitor"??? How can you believe this nonsense? Because some unnamed journalist invented it? Such names did NOT exist in Czechoslovakia. Correct it! Just "Martina Hingisová" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.208.89.241 (talk) 03:10, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
- I agree. The surname 'Hingisová Molitor' is nonsensical, violating the Czechoslovak laws & regulations on the register offices, and needs correction to Hingisová only. During her childhood in Czechoslovakia, Martina's surname could be either Hingisová or Molitorová but certainly not both. Also the feminine suffix -ová was obligatory (there are some grammatical exceptions but not in the case of the surname Hingis and Molitor). Bibulus (talk) 18:53, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
I have corrected the Martina's original surname from Hingisová-Molitor to Hingisová. The only reliable source would be the birth record in the official register of births. However Martina Hingis is a living person, which means that the record is not publicly accessible. Another reliable source could be Martina's birth certificate, also not publicly available. So we must rely on the rules and laws effective in Czechoslovakia in 1980. During childhood the Czechoslovak children bore only one surname, either father's surname (default case) or mother's surname. The feminine suffix -ová/-á was obligatory for girls in most cases (dependent grammatically). Only the court could permit an exception. The surname Hingisová-Molitor is definitely nonsense.
