Untitled old thread

[edit]

I heard on Full Contact Fighter Radio in an interview, Marcus Davis said he would be fighting in Belfast on the UFC72: Franklin VS Kampmann card. He said he didn't know the opponent, but that it would be a "big step up in competition. If someone can add this and source it correctly I'd appreciate it, I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm not so sure about the protocol for editing pages. Mataleaohadakajime 21:52, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the Ulster banner from the Belfast fight, it isn't a legal flag of any territory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.195.242.189 (talk) 21:52, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity in the lead

[edit]

I removed ethnicity from the lead per WP:MOSBIO. This was reverted based on the caveat(sp) that it can be included if it is the reason for the person's notablity. I am not really seeing in the article where there is fleashed out, especially in the lead if its notable, so I taged it rather than reverting it for now. I see the nickname, and I sort of hear yeah about "being Irish" is part of his personna/schtick, so to speak, but can more citations be provided about this aspect. My analogy was along the lines of Ron "The Polish Rifle" Jaworski not being called Polish-American even though that was his nickname, ect. Anyways, thank you, --Threeafterthree (talk) 12:56, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I do see where it is talked about, but not in the lead and still not sure if it belongs in the lead. Anyways, maybe some more citations can be provided and those worked into the article and I could add them to the lead. Cheers! --Threeafterthree (talk) 13:02, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure why you have tagged "Irish-American", since the source already cited says "Irish-American Marcus Davis". Here is another source where he talks of being an Irish-American, there are many others but they are mainly MMA websites that I am unsure of the reliability of, so I am trying to stick to mainstream media sources. Would it just be a case of someone saying they are proud of their roots/heritage/ancestry I would agree it should not be in the lead, but when it transcends that and their image and nickname are based on it, I think it would be somewhat lax if the lead simply described him as "American". Completely agree with O'Fenian here. Paralympiakos (talk) 15:42, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
O Fenian, there are many sources that use folk's ethnicity when referring to them, but that doesn't necessarily mean they hold dual nationality or are notable for their ethnicity. Usually if we are going to use the "hyphenated" nationality in the lead, it has to be cited that either they do in fact hold dual nationality, or that their ethnicity is the reason for their notability. Again, this person's ethnicity does seem to have had some coverage and "inpact" on their personna, so I would not dig my heels in on this bio but would defer to others. I will add the cite you mentioned to the lead. Cheers, --Threeafterthree (talk) 16:44, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, would you like to comment either at Cain Velasquez's talk page of the MMA project talk page where ethnicity in the lead is being discussed? That is how I found my way here by the way :). --Threeafterthree (talk) 16:47, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I would agree that simply because a source uses someone's ethnicity does not mean it belongs in the lead, I hoped my comment of "Would it just be a case of someone saying they are proud of their roots/heritage/ancestry I would agree it should not be in the lead" would have been clear on that point. Admittedly that point might not cover "the source says is", but I think the second part of the same sentence would have clarified my point further. The United States, and many other countries as well, have a diverse ethnic make-up so I would agree that ethnicity does not generally need to be emphasised in the lead of an article. However due to this person's self-identification and use of it in their persona, I still believe it would be lax if it were not mentioned in some way in the lead. I will comment at Cain Velasquez's talk page later. O Fenian (talk) 16:58, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
