Malachite kingfisher
A malachite kingfisher (Corythornis cristatus) at Lake Baringo, Kenya. Although many male birds have brighter colours than females, this is not the case with the malachite kingfisher; both sexes are equally colourful. When fishing, these birds often perch less than a metre above the water, diving in once they spot fish, aquatic insects, or crustaceans to prey upon.Photograph: Charles J. Sharp

Size of C. c. stuartkeithi

[edit]

I've reverted a statement that claimed that the subspecies C. c. stuartkeithi is only 10cm in length. This is too small - it is the size of the African dwarf kingfisher. It appears that C. c. stuartkeithi is actually slightly larger than the nominate - see the description by Dickerman in 1989 here where it appears the C. c. stuartkeithi is larger - not smaller - than C. c. galeritus. - Aa77zz (talk) 20:28, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image of incorrect bird

[edit]

Under the 'Distribution and habitat' section of this page, the image shown is, as far as I'm aware, an African pygmy kingfisher, not a malachite. PeanutButterBean (talk) 09:23, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PeanutButterBean: Thanks for raising this. I have looked at pictures of malachite kingfishers on a number of other websites, and I'm confident that you are right in saying that this picture isn't one. I don't know whether it's an African pygmy kingfisher or not, but I'll remove the picture. JBW (talk) 09:32, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
