Etymology

Can anyone provide details on the Lovat/Lovat'/Lowatj that flows through Velikiye Luki and into Lake Ilmen? The latter article provides an edit-me link to it as Lovat'. Thanks. — B.Bryant 00:02, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The details are; Starts from Lake Savjesno just inside Belarus.Flows through Mezha and Sesito Lakes to Russian Federation, Pskov Oblast. Passes in Belarus Mezha settlement.

In Russian Federation passes Ilino, Uzkoi, Ryndino, Zadneje Selo villages. Tributary Seknitsa River. Melny and Kaloshino villages just north of confuence with its tributary Komlja. Flows through Safonovo village located in confuence with Uriikoje River which empties Lake Uriikoje to Lovat. Passes Borok and Gushtshi villages before reaches Lake Borohobskoje. Continues through Borisogleg, Sibtshjevo and Komsha villages to to northern end of Lake Komshino. Passes Dubnevitsi, Kosovo, Stukany, Pyrjalovo and Klevjenki villages before confluence with its tributary Balagyn River. Passes Nikitino, Belogosovo, Kupuj, Ryzhakovo and Bataliha villages before flows through Velikije Luki. After Velikije Luki flows north to the confuence of its tributary Nasva River from the west. After Nasva passes Gorushka, Kartsevo, Marino, Smytse, Burkino, Koshjevitsi, Kostrovo, Horuzhevo, Gubany, Hohlovo, Pestovo, Djukino, Vjasovoje, Nikitino villages before Tserpessa. Passes Sivijevo, Pahomkovo, Grishino, Lehovo, Tokarevo, Sitkino, Podberezje, Shepjevka, Lesotskij Bor, Malaja Hotsizh, Obuhovo, Poludino, Potshinki and Jeldygino villages before the confuence of its tributary Loknja River from the west. Passes Zhukovo and Vlaskovo villages before rapid at Makovejevo village. Passes Podberezje, Pogost, Seltso, Zapolje villages before next rapid at Gorkinovo village. Passes Aleksejevo, Malaja Kunitsy, Malaja Borok and Krivopleso villagges before next rapid located at Podberesinskije. Passes Opiki, Serka, Jermaki, Lazarevo villages before next rapid located down from Lazaravo before Mirnoje village. Passes Luka, Podmogilitsky, Babynino, Novaja and Podfilni villages. Small tributary Vitsa River from west. Passes Vetno, Dunajevo, Ilinskoje, Gora, Tarysheno, Babino, Stretsovo, Stresheno, Sopki and Kuzemkino villages before flows through Holm. Passes Staraja Holm, Rakovo, Osetshtshe, Gorki, Zaborje, Rakitno, Berezovo, Gorodnja, Blazniha, Belohnovo, Bushjeva, Bushjevka, Bolshoi Zhidovitsi, Knjashtshino, Malaja Zhidovitsi, Gubino, Ljublino, Shalyshino, Sedejevo, Rjabkovo, Pankovka, Gorki, Peregino, Stehnovo, Starokursko, Kursko, Terebyni, Zaretse, Kolomno, Kuliki and Pogostishtshje villages before next rapid located at Staraja Peressa. Passes Rahlitsy, Budomitsy, Podolikino, Shotovo, Drozduno, Hodyni, Lahovitsi, Luka, Verjasko, Shelgunovo, Zarobje, Kulakovo, Kobylkino, Omytskino, Novoje Ramyshjevo, Staroje Ramyshjevo, Redtsy, Jershino, Dretenka and Gontsty villages before passes Parfino and Fedorkovo settlements. Before confluence with Pola River at Gorodok passes Zaostrovje, Zaklinje, Sloboda, Hmeljevo and Beresitskoje villages. After Gorodok the main stream in delta is named Staraja Lovat and flows to the Ilmajärvi (Ozero Ilmen).
