Naming convention

[edit]

Are these people "Hawaiian" or just born in Hawaii? Hawaiians are a people, a race, not people "from" Hawaii. I know that sounds provincial, but it is a fact. It would be more correct to title this article "Local authors" or "Authors from Hawaii". I must say, I also object to the creation of a page containing only a list for what appears to be the sole purpose of linking in a page about a relatively unknown (or just unknown) author. An article about writers in Hawaii would be more appropriate and far more useful - Marshman 17:25, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The page could contain separate sections for "authors of Hawaiian ethnicity" and "authors from the state of Hawaii". Other pages have such splits. (Dutch literature) Rmhermen 17:32, Apr 20, 2004 (UTC)
I suppose. I think first a name change would be in order as "authors from" are not necessarily Hawaiian. Indeed, why split up the discussion along ethnic grounds which might be entirely unnatural with respect to the subject matter. Rename the page Writers from Hawaii, which is inclusive and not divisive. I also see a list as a temporary thing and not an article. An article would discuss writing, writers, etc. from Hawaii; not just list people that have some good or vague connection to the Islands - Marshman 19:54, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Hawaiian is a perfectly good term for any individual from Hawaii, to suggest otherwise is racist. Furthermore, I would like to echo calls for the expansion of this article, informations about the general style of Hawaiian literature, its history and some early and/or prominant examples would be grand. This page should be be renamed Hawaii literature. "Hawaiian" does not refer to a person from Hawaii in the way that "Texan" means a person from Texas; Hawaiian refers to a specific ethnic group. Unless this page is meant to be restricted to literature written by ethnic Hawaiians, the description is inaccurate.
