list order

[edit]

I think it's good if this list is ordered by surnames as it used to be. Andres 15:05, 2 Sep 2003 (UTC)

<Domi> I sorted them without reading the discussions (sorry). Hope this is OK.

Just don't add new names if it's tedious, add only when a new article is written. Andres 15:22, 2 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I didn't just mean tedious to write, but tedious to read too. Especially since poeple might not realize that they are sorted by last name, and instead might think that it's a random list. Perhaps I should put them into categories, but I didn't want to do that since some people are hard to put in one category. You can revert it if you disagree, I don't feel that strongly about it, just thought it would look more orderly this way. --Dori 18:54, 2 Sep 2003 (UTC)
I have no problem when the names are ordered by surnames but you are right that some people might have. I imagine two ways out. First we may state at the beginning of the lists that the names are ordered by surnames (or names as in the case of Mother Teresa). The other way is that used in other lists of names in Wikipedia. It is like:

I have always thought this is tedious, unnatural and superfluous but this would solve your problem. What do you think? Andres 19:34, 2 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I guess I can mention the way the list is sorted. As I said, I don't have any big objections to it myself (as I started the list that way), but thought others might want it done differently. --Dori 12:40, 3 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I still think Mehemet Ali should be under M, as Ali was not his surname, or was it? As far as I know, there were no surnames in the Ottoman empire. Andres 19:13, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Arian Avrazi

[edit]

I don't know how you have gotten Arian Avrazi's name as a composer. I am albanian and I don't know him. He doesn't deserve to be in that list.

You should put the well known composer Tish Daija who past away last september.

Also, I saw some singers name like Anjeza Shahini etc, etc and I didn't see Vace Zela.

I'll appreciate if someone will check very carefully this website and specially this list before you update. I am an Albanian-American and I can say that it's not fair to put someones name who hasn't done anything or they don't have a long and good carrier as a artist.

sincerely, ellie

As unë s'e njoh...The reason why you were reverted is that many vandals like to remove text from articles for no reason. Anyone may add and remove text from here. If you feel some entries need to be added or removed do so, but say something as to why in the Edit summary so that people do not think that you are vandalizing. Creating an account would also help. Let me know if you have any questions. Dori | Talk 03:28, Dec 23, 2004 (UTC)

I took out Claudius as I know of no source that says he was anything but Roman. Perhaps Claudius II was meant? But in that case, so little is known about him, and so much of what is known is from entirely dubious sources, that it's difficult to make such confident assertions about his ethnicity. —Charles P. (Mirv) 04:23, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Illyrian characters cannot be used. They predate Albanian identity. Iskenderbey

I added Vasile Lupu. Most sources cite him as Albanian. Dahn 11:36, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Eftimiu spelled his first name as "Victor" (not "Viktor") - he opted for the main Romanian spelling. Dahn 11:41, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Link should be removed, IMO.

Ataturk is an albanian now ?

[edit]

Ataturk was not Albanian, I will keep deleting him off this page. I would like to know why someone is trying to ban me for speaking the truth. What is that all about ? A look at the meaning of the name Ataturk( Father of the Turks) leaves no doubt about his ethnicity.

To the person who keeps inserting him in - PLEASE STOP !

In this list there are some people listed as being of albanian origin, even though in their own wikipedia page they are listed as being of italian/greek/armenian/other origin, as for example Marisa Tomei, Danny de Vito, George Tennet, Sinan etc. Couln't someone make a cross-reference so that there are no contradictions betweeen the two pages ?

Albanians steal other history and try to hide well known things like that Skanderbeg is Serb by mom ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.86.207.71 (talk) 21:07, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[1] Well it seem so! please see the following book for further information The New Encyclopedia of Islam - Cyril Glassé in page 38 it is writen clear from the author '....Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was of Albanian origin....' so nothing is invented and by the way "father of the turks" it does not exclude a difrent origin for the person.

About Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu I think that it doesn't worth it to expalin, becaouse it is easly verified form a lot of sources his pure Albanian origin.

Some of these people are only of Albanian descent

[edit]

E.g. John Belushi (born USA), Ferid Murad " born in Whiting, Indiana" (USA), Antonio Gramsci "born in Ales, Italy, on the island of Sardinia", Kristina O'Donnelly "Born in Rome, Italy ... she feels at home both in Ireland and the U.S.A."

It would be more accurate to remove these people from the page, or to rename the page "People of Albanian ancestry"

In any case, the page name does not seem very ideal. I'm no expert, but I simply don't believe that Atatürk, Tancu Ciller and more than 20 Ottoman PMs all identify/-ied themselves as Albanians. Grouping people by ethnicity is always very problematic, and it is much simpler just to categorize people by their citizenship. At least unless the individuals in question primarily choose to identify themselves with something different than their citizenship. Valentinian (talk) 20:24, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Propose Trimming Down

[edit]

I suggest that if a person is not notable enough to have a page, then they shouldn't be on this list either. Nobody has posted in the talk section, here, in quite some time. I think it's time this page saw some active discussion. Gruber76 14:14, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of Albanians or List of people with Albanian origin?

[edit]

Why are many famous people listed mainly because of their Albanian origin? Shouldn't this list be a list of Albanians and not a list of people with Albanian origin? Maybe we should create a list of people with Albanian origin so that this problem will be solved? --Albanau 23:01, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the best model is this: List_of_Armenians. We should have separate lists (pages) for each field and then show the summary of each in this page like the Armenians very well do. sulmues --Sulmues 20:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

cleanup

[edit]

this list is an incredible mess. it needs to be cut down to an essential core and then rebuilt with more care. Specifically,

  • remove all redlinks
  • give lifetime dates for each entry
  • give a brief characterization for each entry
  • make it a "wikitable-sortable" table instead of the unmanageable sections

this is a joke

[edit]

the Entrepreneurs, business people, organisation executives section is a joke and a mockery of Albanian business people. you've listed ONE credible business man.

what happened to the owners of businesses in Kosovo that turnover millions of euros. what happened to the owners of businesses in Albania that make millions of Lek?

where are the names of Ekrem Lluka Remzi Kelmendi Erton Namoni the Albanian Billionaire who has an oil empire and is supposedly interested in buying AC MILAN

the people listed under this category are a joke and are not the only people of Albanian origin that have had successful carriers in the business world.

I as an Albanian urge you to edit this section and stop making the Albanian business community look like a joke to the outside world. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.0.201.3 (talk) 15:47, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Atatürk's family tree

http://www.kanalkultur.com/yolalevi/...r/aleviata.jpg

Yörük Turkmen in Balkan http://balkanpazar.org/yorukler.asp

His ancestors were Turcomans of Karaman who were settled into the Balkans in order to increase the numbers of Turkics in the region.

Mustafa was born as the son of Mr and Mrs Ali Rıza Efendi Turkish and Zübeyde Hanım in Salonika, which was then a part of the Ottoman Empire. It was also home to various peoples in the cosmopolitan Muslims with Jews and Christians lived together peacefully mainly. Mustafa's paternal grandfather, Kızıl Hafız Ahmed was one of the Yörük Türkmen. His mother was the daughter of an old peasant, originally from Konya, Karaman-derived family of the little town Langasa (now Langadas) in Thessaloniki. The parents were married 1871,

"Gentlemen, my ancestors came from Anatolia to Rumelia is from the Turkmen Yörük " M. Kemal Ataturk

and according to Falih Rıfkı Atay, Ali Rıza's roots have come from Söke in Aydın Province.[13][14] His mother Zübeyde is thought to be of Turkish[10][11] and according to Şevket Süreyya Aydemir, her roots have come from Turkoman (Türkmen) and in his family, there was roumor that they have come of Yörük.[15]

Some of these wild reports charged him with being anything from a traitor to his country to being a "foreigner." Ahmet Pasha Dukagjini

[edit]

In 1515, the Ottomans sent a powerful army under the command of the Albanian general Ahmet Pasha Dukagjini. Northern Iraq was conquered and by 1535 the whole of Iraq got rid of the rule of the Shah.

Zeri: http://www.zeriyt.com/albanian-rulers-of-the-middle-east-t35890.0.html#ixzz19teOeeVs

If you want to actually go back further, to the rise of Ottoman domination in Iraq in 1515, when the Ottomans basically took over Mesopotamia and prevented Safavi Iran from transforming Mesopotamia into their own satrapy, so to speak, the Ottomans eventually, beginning in 1860, with what we call the reforms, the Tanzimat, brought more and more Sunnis—largely, Sunni Arabs, because they were the majority of the Sunni population, but also Sunni Turkmen and Kurds —into the administrative, bureaucratic, and coercive infrastructure of the Ottoman state in Iraq.

Belushi

[edit]

James and John Belushi are of albanian descent. why are they removed? Jim Belushi was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Agnes (née Samaras), who was of Albanian descent, and Adam Belushi (1918-1996),[1] an Albanian immigrant and restaurant operator who left his native village, Qyteza, in 1934 at the age of sixteen.

James Michael DuPont (talk) 16:53, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and because James and John Belushi were born in the US, they are not albanians. This is a list of notable albanians, not people of albanian descent. --Nuujinn (talk) 17:25, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mother Theresa was born 26 August 1910, in Üsküb, Ottoman Empire , are you going to remove her too?

James Michael DuPont (talk) 17:40, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If she's not Albanian, why would you say she should be on the list? --Nuujinn (talk) 17:43, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Because she is albanian, just like the belushis. This list contains many ethnic albanians, albania was a country for a very short time. I think this list should include albanian people or we just make a new one for that purpose. what happened to the picture with all the faces on it? James Michael DuPont (talk) 17:53, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But the Belushis are not Albanian, they are of Albanian descent and citizens of the US. See also List of Albanian Americans and Albanian American. Being descended from Scots doesn't make me Scottish. --Nuujinn (talk) 18:01, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you remove mother theresa, this list will become usless. then you will remove skenderbeg cause he was in the ottoman empire. so what is the point of this list? 18:05, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Honestly, I don't see much point in this kind of list, but if we are to have it, it should be accurate. --Nuujinn (talk) 19:13, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ataturk, et. al.

[edit]

The article states the list includes "ethnic Albanian people or people of full or partial Albanian ancestry." To exclude Ataturk, one would have to redefine the page to include only pure Albanians (if such a thing exists) and each entry would need to be vetted. There are plenty of sources provided that include Albanian descent for Ataturk. ScrpIronIV 14:47, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The inclusion of Ataturk is needing a clear reliable source, the ones in the article were not verifiable and were claiming possible Albanian ancestry, far from enough. FkpCascais (talk) 17:41, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@FkpCascais: The lede states: "This is a list of historical and living Albanians (ethnic Albanian people or people of full or partial Albanian ancestry) who are famous or notable, sorted by occupation and name." (emphasis added)

The content you are removing contains the following SIX references to partial Albanian ancestry, thus qualifying him for this list. Please justify your edit-warring to remove sourced content. ScrpIronIV 17:49, 10 March 2016 (UTC) [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6][reply]

The problem was that we are talking about Ataturk a widely notable historical figure so seemed strange not to have any verifiable one, but by just searching Google books I found more, although there are others putting the issue in question. Reverted myself. Although for me personally seems a bit silly to include in such lists people with remote or unclear origins, seems it is widespread practice, so my mistake. FkpCascais (talk) 17:52, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; the sources are the only reason I was restoring it. I tend to stay away from Balkans articles. ScrpIronIV 18:07, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
