Ferryhill station
[edit]Interested to know more about the potential of opening a station at Ferryhill, and added some references. Progress with this seems to have stalled. Does anyone know better?
- It was part of a proposal by Railtrack to re-open the route, with the potential for a local passenger service, but nothing came of it following the collapse of Railtrack and the cutting of government grants. As part of its bid to take over the GNER franchise, Virgin Trains also proposed to re-open the track as overspill for the ECML, but this would not have involved a local service. When GNER retained the franchise, this also came to nothing.
A very short section of the line from Pelaw Junction remains in operation today, serving the open-cast coal mine at Wardley.
- Does anyone know if this is still the case? It looks very overgrown to me.
"Around one mile of track to the south of Penshaw was 'stolen' in 2003[1] and will have to be replaced if the line is finally reopened. This theft, estimated to have cost more than £1 million, is thought to have taken place late at night over many months, with the track and sleepers sold for scrap."
The BBC article related to the text above says that the estimated value was £250,000.
Opening date
[edit]According to the article the line was formed in 1839 from the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway. The N&DJR however in most references (including Wikipedia) opened in June 1844. It marked the breaking of a record. According to Vaughan, A., (1997) Railwaymen, Politics and Money, London: John Murray, the opening was inaugurated by a Midland Railway special which covered the 303 miles from London via Rugby and Derby in 9 hours and 32 minutes, including stops for refreshments and engine changes - absolutely unheard of up to that time Chevin (talk) 16:44, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Two stations to add to RDT
[edit]Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 20:19, 10 February 2018 (UTC) Two stations to add to RDT Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 20:19, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Looking at the Disused Railways article on the Leamside Line, their sectional map shows the following:-
- ...Between the main line in the Durham area an Leamside, there is shown Frankland Siding (a station that opened in March 1861 and closed in July 1877)
- ...Between Leamside station and Fencehouses station, on the main running line and not on the junction line, there is shown Rainton station (which opened in August 1844 and closed in September 1844)
Could both these two stations now be added to the Wikipedia RDT that is incorporated within the main article on the Leamside Line
Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 20:19, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Frankland and Frankland Siding are the same: see the page at Disused stations. I agree about Rainton, but am not confident adding it myself. I will ask for some help elsewhere.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 20:57, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- I've had a go but it's now looking a bit cramped around Rainton. It's unclear how the blue Lambton line crosses the Meadows branch, but to be fair that was already the case. Please feel free to improve! Certes (talk) 22:54, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Grateful thanks for updating the RDT with the information on the Rainton area.
