Since Zimmermann's Coffeehouse allowed Bach's Collegium Musicum to perform there without fee, and charged patrons no fee to listen, reaping profit entirely from the sale of coffee to the audience, the Coffee Cantata can rightly be regarded as the first commercial ever written.
