Performance style and ability

[edit]

Trying to piece together some sources on Elling's distinctive performance style; hard to separate the subjective from the technical here:

  • "...a few of this singer’s unconventional strengths, including his viselike grasp of intonation and timbre and his fastidious yet felicitous way with a phrase." "Mr. Elling’s mannered style...occupies the overlap among beatnik chic, clubby jazz geekdom and pseudo-mythic solipsism." "...his sharp intuition and rangy agility..." Nate Chinen, New York Times
  • "Kurt Elling is one of the most technically dazzling vocalists in jazz today" John Fordham, The Guardian.
  • "...the charismatic Elling approaches his material in the probing spirit of a footloose instrumentalist...his voice is a saxophone, testing harmonies at the head of an impeccable trio" Clive Davis, The Times

Davis nails it though, so I would start there. Viriditas (talk) 04:19, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind the dates. Davis' review is from 2006, and Elling has really matured as a musician since that time. Viriditas (talk) 05:40, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Might be a good idea to focus on reviews by recording/tour so that criticism follows a chronological progression. Viriditas (talk) 06:24, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current lineup

[edit]

Need verification. Aside from Hobgood, I'm not seeing corroboration between Elling's website, his facebook account, and the current tour lineup musicians as listed in the press/reviews. Viriditas (talk) 06:23, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Viriditas and others. I manage Kurt's newsletter, Facebook page, and website content. I really appreciate all your efforts in keeping the KE Wikipedia entry up to date, and I want to work with you, your energy, and your expertise. I'm new to Wikipedia editing but not new to wikis, so please help me as I learn my way forward here. For example, I'm not sure what kind of verification you need for the edit I just made to the list of band members. Guitarist John McLean has been touring with Kurt since last summer's European tour and is featured on The Gate. The Band section on Kurt's website is out of date and will be updated in preparation for the February 1, 2011 release of The Gate. The Facebook listing is accurate. Thanks! Welcome! We're happy to have you. Any idea if the NoCal shows are confirmed yet for spring 2011? I'm thinking of the Berkeley show in particular. Also, the question that everyone has been asking, when will the SSO release a DVD of Elling's performance? Seems a bit strange to hold on to it for so long without a release. Viriditas (talk) 00:37, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the welcome! I've just checked, and the 04/23/2011 Berkeley show is confirmed. It will be with the current Quintet, including John McLean. However, the Calperfs site lists it as a Dedicated to You show. I'll bring that to the attention of KE's management. I'm sure it's part of The Gate tour, not a reprise of DTY.
I'll check about whether there will be an SSO DVD. KE tours Australia 10/23-11/02/10 so I'll ask before that.
I have a new KE-approved profile photo to post. How do I go about that? Awakentech (talk) 02:33, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you releasing it under a free license like the ones currently in the article? If so, you could create an account on Commons and upload it, so that all projects (in all languages) can use it. Let me know if I can help in any way. If the photo is already online, or if you wish to e-mail it to me, I can upload it for you, if you like. Viriditas (talk) 02:49, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! Viriditas (talk) 08:06, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current albums

[edit]

Would someone who is a Wikipedia editor and knowledgeable about Kurt Elling's work -- such as Viriditas or Gareth E Kegg -- please create a new page/article for Kurt's 2012 album, "1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project"? There is a link for it in the list of Grammy nominations, but the page does not yet exist. I'm not skilled enough with Wikipedia to know how to create the templates for such a page, but I would be happy to fill it out with any information you don't have easily on hand. The 55th Grammy Awards are Sunday, February 10, 2013 and "1619 Broadway" is up for the Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album. It would be great to have this page created before the Awards, if possible. (BTW, every one of Kurt's ten albums has been Grammy nominated, a streak unequalled in Grammy history, as far as we can ascertain.) You can find some information about "1619 Broadway" here: http://kurtelling.com/music/1619_broadway/ Please let me know how I can help. Thank you! Awakentech (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 14:41, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to start the article later tonight or tomorrow. Viriditas (talk) 04:25, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, looks like Gareth E Kegg got to it first. Viriditas (talk) 04:28, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, Gareth E Kegg, and thanks, Viriditas, for being ready to start it, too. Really appreciate it! A question: The link for "1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project" works properly in the Discography section but not in the table of Grammy nominations and wins, where it goes to a "create this article" page. I looked at the mark-up and fixed one typo (R -> r in PRoject), but I can't figure out the problem. Any ideas? awakentech (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:37, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. Viriditas (talk) 01:28, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

I added one of Kurt's official press photos for his latest album, "1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project," to the Infobox, after researching the appropriate licensing (Free Art License). Awakentech (talk) 09:42, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reminds me of Bill Evans on the cover of Explorations. See File:Bill Evans Trio Explorations.jpg Since this is jazz we're talking about, I'm assuming the similarity is intentional! Viriditas (talk) 09:56, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
