Etymology
[edit]What is the etymology of this ethnonym? The Chinese appears to be 果敢族, which seems just to be a phonetic conversion to Chinese characters. Badagnani (talk) 05:54, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- I haven't really found much mention of this group at all anywhere, other than in the flood of news reports over the past couple days; the zh-wiki article has more, but it's almost all unreferenced. Maybe tomorrow I'll snoop around the library and look at some Southeast Asia encyclopedias and stuff. So far it seems that most scholarly works just treat the Kokang as Chinese (which I guess technically they are) and don't say anything else on the matter (for example, this one seems to be like that). I think this Chinese article may have some good information (just try to ignore the porn ads all over the sidebar...), but I haven't had a chance to sit down and read it yet. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 06:07, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Today I found this book:
- Leo Suryadinata, ed. (1997). Ethnic Chinese as Southeast Asians. Singapore: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. ISBN 981-3055-58-8.
- It has a whole chapter on ethnic Chinese in Burma. I haven't had time to read the chapter yet, though, so I'm not sure how informative it may be. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 15:15, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
