Disambig pages should not list everyone with a common first name

[edit]

I have removed all the following items that point to a person with the first name Kim, which was about half the page. If any of these refer to a person who uses Kim as a family name, please feel free to reinsert them under the correct category.

* Kim Clijsters, Belgian tennis player
* Kim Carnes, singer
* Kim Deal, singer, guitarist, bassist with Pixies, The Breeders and The Amps
* Kim Gordon, singer, guitarist, bassist with Sonic Youth
* Kim Hee-sun, actress and singer
* Kim Mitchell, musician and radio personality
* Kim Wilde, singer
* Kim Basinger, actress
* Kim Cattrall, actress
* Kim Novak, actress
* Kim Possible, Disney Channel original Emmy-winning American animated television series about a teenage crimefighter of the same name
* Kim Dela Cruz, a famous actor
* Kim Yoon-jin, a Korean American actress
* Kim Beazley, Australian politician
* Kim Campbell, first and only (to date) female Canadian Prime Minister
* Kim Kaphwan, Taekwondo fighter in the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters games

The page is now for people with Kim as either a given name or surname, hence it should include all those called Kim who have an article on English Wikipedia. Politics a (talk) 15:41, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ignore that statement: the page is a Dab page, and those given-named Kim may appear on the Dab Kim only if they are widely known, and referred to, as "Kim" w/o mention of the surname. Lil' Kim arguably qualifies; almost certainly no others do, except perhaps some fic chars.

  • The following are obvious cases of Kim as a Korean-ethnic surname (tho they may not go back on the accompanying Dab):
* Kim Hee-sun, actress and singer
* Kim Yoon-jin, a Korean American actress
* Kim Kaphwan, Taekwondo fighter in the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters games
I'm ashamed that so few American editors know that, that those names could stay there for over 3 years.

Scandinavian

[edit]

This article states that Kim is a scandinavian male name, originating from Joachim, but at least in Sweden it's used for both sexes. Of course, it's possible that it has been a male name, but that the unisex use has spread from other countries. In either case, doesn't the current text imply that it is always used as a male name in Scandinavian countries? 85.230.107.117 (talk) 09:40, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal

[edit]

I'm removing the tag, since

  1. no one has offered any rationale
  2. the proposal is for a monstrous forbidden hybrid, since large numbers of surname entries may not appear on a Dab page, and a surname page cannot serve the functions for the needed Dab page.
