Annexed by Ottawa? Is the word annexed really necessary? Though I know the word annex means "the legal incorporation of some territory into another geo-political entity" the word annex conjures up images of hostile miltary take over, becauce of that I am changing it into "merged with" Pseudoanonymous 04:02, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I hadn't picked up on that, but you're absolutely right. It was an amalgamation, not an annexation. The former City of Ottawa ceased to exist in the same way that the former City of Kanata ceased to exist; the former didn't take over the latter. Skeezix1000 13:11, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

March Road

[edit]

Is it really necessary to have such a large section inline on March Road? It's already got it's own page. Edgeware 13:39, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've recently deleted it due to unnecessary duplication. I have also cast doubts on the notability of the Music section.

Meanwhile, if i've forgot any communities within Kanata, please feel free to add it.--JForget 17:30, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Estimated population

[edit]

Is the estimated population REALLY 100,000? I find it hard to believe that when I arrived in Kanata with my parents in 1984 that the population was 25,000 and it's now 100,000. Zenitram82 15:27, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Given the growth in Kanata over the last twenty years, 100000 might not be far off. However, population data must be sourced (and the source should be reliable and verifiable -- such as Statscan). Someone's unsourced estimate of the current population is not appropriate content for the article. I have removed the sentence in question. Skeezix1000 16:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know Kanata has grown incredibly over the last twenty years but I find it hard to believe Kanata has hit the 100,000 mark yet. Zenitram82 17:06, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Umm I live in Kanata, and I remember talking about the population a year ago. We thought there were about 70,000 people in Kanata. Thats pretty far from 100,000. If you search google, "kanata population" the town's official site puts the population at 67 000 as of 2004. I don't think it can grow to 100,000 in one year. So I am changing it to 70,000. Pseudoanonymous 21:57, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm saying this some years later but I'm pretty sure Kanata is pushing 200,000 70.26.169.152 (talk) 04:12, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kanata neighborhoods

[edit]

Just a head's up on the neighborhood page of Kanata. I spent some time today updating this area. Before amalgamation, there were actually 10 neighborhoods (not including the rural Kanata area). I thought it would be of benifit to update this area with the proper names and boundaries. Sorry about all the changes in the history tab - the more I updated the small errors, the more errors I found later. For consistancy, I basically ended up re-posting that part of the article a couple of times. Hope no one takes offense...Mpwilsonis 00:05, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed the Kanata West neighborhood listed. The area described between Maple Grove, Hazelden and Terryfox contains no developments other than the Kanata Recreation Complex and the associated lands. Furthermore the border between Stittsville and Kanata was misunderstood. The boundary is the Carp River and thus the big box stores such as the Lowes are firmly within Stittsville's boundaries and are administrated by Ward 6 - Stittsville. You can consult the city of Ottawa map if you are unsure. Because of the fact that there was no actual housing or new developments on the Kanata side of the area originally described I thought it was just more accurate to scrap the neighborhood all together. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.26.169.152 (talk) 04:31, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2006 census

[edit]

Kanata's population isn't independently reported by the Canadian Census anymore...2006 census figure is calculated by summing all of Kanata's component census tracts. Marathone 09:25, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo

[edit]

I don't think the photo currently in use, of an empty road (March Road) represents Kanata very well. I'm sure a better photo can be found. LK 19:59, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! I took a picture of the KANATA sign inside the NE cloverleaf at Eagleson Road and Hwy 417 and placed it above the existing picture, not wanting to take the decision to delete that picture, although I would not mind if it was removed. Not sure what else could "represent" Kanata any better than that big sign that's not a shopping centre or another road :) --Jelsova (talk) 23:52, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing on the Tech problems

[edit]

Obvious the recent announcement from Dell is one of the reasons I'm posting this comment, but I see nothing about the Tech history/problems that Kanata endured. Nothing on the late 90s tech bubble burst. --JForget 19:37, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Elementary schools

[edit]

Please update this. More than one of the elementary schools listed under English Language were converted in the late 1970s - early 1980s to "French immersion"-style instruction where use of English is minimized due to most of the childrens' mother tongues being English already. See Official bilingualism in Canada. Oldspammer (talk) 14:12, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Retitle article

[edit]

Since it appears that Kanata is now a section of the city of Ottawa, and no longer just a city within Ottawa's metro area, should the title of the article not be "Kanata, Ottawa, Ontario"? I don't want to do this without input, though. YellowAries2010 (talk) 05:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adjacent places of Kanata, Ontario

[edit]

According to the graphic at the bottom, Pakenham is adjacent to Kanata, but it's not. Carp and Barrhaven are adjacent to Kanata, but missing from the image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JordanLeBlanc (talkcontribs) 19:58, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Census information

[edit]

It seems Stats Can population census information includes parts of Stittsville in the count. Are we to include Stittsville as well or count it differently? Earl Andrew just changed the census data from 117,806 to 90,806 (117,304 in the population centre). While I don't disagree with this change we need to know where 90,806 came from. Kindest regards. 174.95.4.183 (talk) 23:27, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The 90,806 is within the former city limits of Kanata. I will put in a proper source. -- Earl Andrew - talk 15:48, 19 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A place's "population centre" doesn't necessarily correspond to the geographic boundaries of the place itself: it can include areas outside of Kanata that are demographically contiguous with it, and it can exclude areas in Kanata that aren't as densely populated. So it would be valid to include Kanata's "population centre" as supplementary data, clarifying that that includes Stittsville, but the basic "population of Kanata" itself should correctly reflect the number Earl Andrew is citing.
