KM (Ground effect vehicle)Caspian Sea MonsterWP:COMMONNAME and WP:NATURAL. "KM" - the official Russian designation of this ekranoplan - is ambiguous; while the current title is technically correct, WP:NATURAL suggests looking for a reasonably commonly-used alternative English name for a disambiguator before resorting to paraenthical disambiguation, and the KM ekranoplan is far and away commonly known as "Caspian Sea Monster" in the English literature (this is likely the WP:COMMONNAME overall, worldwide, in fact). Therefore having this page at Caspian Sea Monster is the preferred course of action. The Bushranger One ping only 07:11, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Location of the wreck?

[edit]

Since this was never recovered from the seafloor of the Caspian, do we have coordinates to attach to the article? -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 19:25, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alexeyev/Alexeev

[edit]

This article shows both spellings; the Lun article seems to favor the Alexeev spelling. Someone with knowledge of Cyrillic translation should pick one & apply it to every instance in every article. Steve8394 (talk) 23:48, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Year of destruction

[edit]

The article states that the KM was destroyed in 1980, but the spy satellite image supposedly of the KM was taken in 1984. Is there an explanation for this inconsistency? - ZLEA T\C 18:21, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Largest Aircraft?

[edit]

This definition is disputable and due to issues of aircraft designation I wish to bring it to discussion rather than immediately edit this portion. The CAA classifies these as aircraft, however the International Maritime Organization classifies them distinctly and the FAA and EASA classify them as boats. This means that the classification of this craft as the largest aircraft may be true in some nations, but not in others. As wikipedia is a multi-national entity I am unclear how to proceed on this, as forcing any individual definition is arbitrary in these circumstances. Jyggalypuff (talk) 20:16, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jyggalypuff If you can find a reliable source that states that the CSM’s status is disputed, then go ahead and add it. Otherwise it would be original research. - ZLEA T\C 22:53, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would sources on Ground Effect Vehicle Classifications in general suffice? The Caspian Sea Monster is one such and if ground effect vehicles in general aren’t classified as aircraft than it stands to reason that such a designation is incorrect. I can go pull those sources in the next day if so. Jyggalypuff (talk) 01:54, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of name

[edit]

'Screen effect' or 'screen glider'? This article and the Ground effect vehicle article disagree; here we have 'screen effect' as the English translation of the Russian 'ekranoplan', while the GEV article says the English translation is 'screenglider'. Can it be both? I don't say it's impossible. 2A00:23C7:3119:AD01:FC95:479:191E:1958 (talk) 05:08, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Photos on line

The Feb8, 2023 on line article from Robb Report

I am unclear on copyright restrictions and posting images but I think the two photos in this article would be a valuable addition to this Wiki page. I encourage more qualified editors to add the photographs as able. Berkeleybill (talk) 21:05, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New sources

[edit]

I've been digging around and found that the Caspian Sea Monster is not actually at the bottom of the ocean. Please add these links to the RefList because I dont know how this website works. https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/caspian-sea-monster-ekranoplan/index.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy4dRFbNnXg https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/ekranoplan-lun#:~:text=The%20place%20is%20about%2020,need%20to%20know%20the%20address. IDoThisAtWork (talk) 13:57, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IDoThisAtWork The aircraft in those sources is not actually the Caspian Sea Monster, but the similar-looking Lun-class ekranoplan. The Lun-class is identifiable by the six missile launchers mounted on top of the fuselage, which the Caspian Sea Monster lacked. This is simply a case of misidentification by the sources, with the real Caspian Sea Monster still being at the bottom of the sea. - ZLEA T\C 23:02, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
