The main page for Joseph Adhemar states that "Adhemar theorised about the thickness and predicted the Antarctic ice sheet (the continent had not been sighted) by...". But his book was published in 1842, and in 1821 the first documented landing on mainland Antarctica was by the American sealer John Davis in Western Antarctica on 7 February 1821, although some historians dispute this claim.

- Yes (rather a slow response here!). The continent had certainly been sighted but possibly not landed upon. Since landing is not so relevant here I shall remove the comment. Thincat (talk) 08:30, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
