What is the source for the statement that John Terry and Frank Lampard are COUSINS? Citrusjoie (talk) 15:46, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Football career
I would love to see this article edited to include *confirmed* rumors about his sudden disenchantment with Jose Mourinho. Reportedly, Terry became internally irate after the manager asked the Chelsea medical team if his poor performance was due to a physical injury. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.194.23.43 (talk) 20:31, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- Early in his career Terry was involved in an unsavoury off-the-pitch incident
It's not really satisfactory to hint at this without any explanation. I understand that repeating the specific allegations made in the papers at the time would be unwise in a number of ways, but something as vague as the above is useless; encyclopedias exist to inform people, not merely hint at things they already know. Loganberry (Talk) 23:39, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
Huddersfield
- He spent a brief period on loan with Nottingham Forest in 2000 to build up his first team experience. While playing for Forest, Terry was spotted by then-Huddersfield Town manager Steve Bruce who bid £750,000 for the defender. Chelsea accepted the offer, but it fell through as Terry opted to remain with the Premier League club and learn his trade in the top division.
This is unlikely to be true, given that the quoted article says that Terry was rolling up his sleeves in January and he actually played 6 games for Forest in April and May 2000. Also, he pretty much went into the Chelsea first team after returning from Forest and I seem to remember Platt jokingly asking Vialli if Forest could have him permanently, knowing full well that it would be refused. If I can spare the time, I may well see if can dig out some old Forest articles about it and remove this. 82.3.84.101 (talk) 18:51, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
The above bit was written by me. Looking into this a little further, Bruce is quoted as saying that he signed Chris Lucketti instead of John Terry. However, this is palpable nonsense as Lucketti signed for Huddersfield before Terry was on loan at Forest (and according to Soccerbase, before Platt was even manager at NFFC). So, unless Mr Bruce has invented time travel and not told anyone yet, either the quotes splattered all over the place are wrong or his recollection of events is erroneous. I'm still quite new here, so I'm going to have a look at the original research policy before getting rid of this, but if anyone else has an interpretation, I'd welcome the input. Wizard of WestBridge (talk) 13:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

So it's going. Wizard of WestBridge (talk) 15:45, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Numerous sources affirm that a move to Huddersfield was mooted while Bruce was manager, they just disagree as to why it fell through. Even Terry in that interview above states there was a bid from Huddersfield. I don't see why it needs to be removed. SteveO (talk) 18:05, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
My thinking was that if you take out the contradictory information (fee, timing and who rejected what) you're not left with much other than some speculation, reported several years after the event. I didn't think it was particularly relevant to include it as I'm sure that many clubs' interest in Terry has come to nothing. Anyway, if you think it's relevant I don't have a particular interest in keeping it out, as long as the entry doesn't contain any dubious statements. I'm rewording the part concerned to reflect this - let me know what you think. Wizard of WestBridge (talk) 17:17, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- This particular rumour did get a lot of coverage from a variety of sources, and they all seem in agreement that a bid was made, even if the other details are sketchy. It was meaningful enough for Terry to be asked about it years later. Your new reversion is fine by me. SteveO (talk) 16:44, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
Champions Magazine No.14 article
It said that Terry came from West Ham United youth system, but fail to promote and he enter the Blues youth system.
It is intesting because none of the other article point out that, so can anyone find the fact and add into Wiki?Matthew hk 17:11, 19 February 2006 (UTC)John Terry is really really cool n fit. From sxc Danni x
He joind chelsea at 14 though so its good
ISNT JOHN TERRY 186CM? also he didnt fail to promote he got poached i think man utd were after him and chelsea won the race for him
England captain
I think that as it's mentioned in the Steven Gerrard article it needs to be mentioned here seeing as they are considered the front runners for the role.
I also think it needs to be said that this article needs improvement both in writing and structure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony Florister (talk • contribs)
Height
John Terry is 186 cm tall (that's his official height writen on the Chelsea's website).
World class
I think describing him as one of the worlds best is a little generous after his fairly dismal performances at interational tournaments and how suspect he can look against top class opposition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by UncleTheOne (talk • contribs)
- which "dismal performances" would these be? John Terry is most definitely a World Class player and one of the worlds best. He's captain of the best team in the best league in the world as well as captain of one of the top 10 teams in the world. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows anything about football who would argue that Terry isn't world class. DJDannyP//Talk2Me 14:50, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Dismal was maybe a little harsh but he never imposed himself on games like he would at Chelsea. Unlike true world class defenders such as Fabio Cannavaro and Lillian Thuram. At Euro2004 he was truely awful, Campbell had to do the work of two defenders to cover up for him. The world class tag is thrown around all too freely. Best league in the world? Not watch any other football outside England then? Up until last week he was only Chelsea's second best centre back. Until he proves himself for England then he will only ever be a very good defender.—Preceding unsigned comment added by UncleTheOne (talk • contribs)
Acquittal
Why has no one mentioned his time with the wrong side of the law. Has everyone forgetton what the england captain did a few years back?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshc90 (talk • contribs)
- If you're referring to the incident with the doorman, then the article does mention it. If you're referring to another incident then by all means add it, provided it is backed up with a reliable source. I also reverted your addition to the article. You may think Terry doesn't deserve the England captaincy, but this is not the place to air your views. SteveO 13:27, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Needs improving
This article needs editing heavily. If you look at some other pages for lesser defenders you see them applauded a lot more than JT is here, and he is easily one of the world's best defenders. England haven't had a good coach for about 20 years, so no wonder that form might be dodgy but even still it is a lot better than many other such wiki "world class" rate defenders. If you look at it for Chelsea in the champions league (known now to be a lot better than international) and the premiership, also now easily better than most international football, you can't but conclude he is a lot better than this article gives on. It is time to stop the games and make with the facts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Synorbs (talk • contribs) 05:42, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Picture
I took a fairly decent pic of him at the Bridge a couple seasons ago and I think it'd be better to have a pic of him in the Chelsea kit (albeit the old home kit). Sontailsic 02:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

- The current picture is alot clearer of his face. The kit of the team he plays for isn't so important as to be in the picture. JacќяМ ¿Qué? 02:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
It is to most people. John Terry is known among Chelsea fans as Mr.Chelsea, he's the heartbeat of the team and him wearing the kit would represent that better. Sontailsic 02:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- It's more important to see his face. It's about him, not him playing for chelsea. JacќяМ ¿Qué? 02:27, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I agree with that. But his identity right now is 'Captain of Chelsea and England', surely a picture of him in the Chelsea strip would fulfil tht identity? It's not like you cannot see his face anyway. But if other people feel the same that's cool, I just think it'd be better to have him in a Chelsea kit.Sontailsic 02:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Chinese descent?

Mourinho
John Terry has been linked to the "mutually agreed parting of ways" between Jose Mourinho and Chelsea. There were numerous news reports, which were never denied by either person, that John Terry, in his capacity as captain of the team, reported to Paul Kenyon that manager Jose Mourinho is "lost control of the team", thus facilitating Mourinho's exodus by the Board. -The Gnome (talk) 19:26, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- A one man 'exodus'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.213.157 (talk) 17:31, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- You are right. I forgot that the term "exodus", in English, has come to mean "a departure or emigration, usually of a large number of people". I should have used "forced exit". (It was the Board and not Mourinho who brought about the "mutual parting of ways".) -The Gnome (talk) 21:27, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Harry Cox
I have edited out this reference which has been marked up for some months as requiring a citation "His great-grandfather, Harry Cox, was a noted traditional folk singer, featured in Lomax interviews.[citation needed]"
Harry Cox was a friend of my daughter's godfather in Norfolk, there seems no local tradition of a relationship to John Terry. Harry's only child to survive infancy as far as I know was Myrtle, she married Lenny Helsdon. A bit of cursory research suggests the names of John Terry's great grandparents were TERRY, WILLING, POWELL, CHESTER, CHURCH, LEWIS(?), BELL and HENESSEY(?). I will make a similar edit on Harry Cox's page. IainWallace (talk) 01:03, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Controversies
Terry was exposed of giving tours of the Chelsea grounds to paying outsiders at a cost of 10,000 pounds. His share, 8,000 pounds, he alleges gets donated to charity, while 2,000 pounds goes to his "acting" agent, Tony Bruce, who organizes the gig.[1]Prizby (talk) 01:26, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Affair
There's not nearly enough written about Mr Terry's alledged affair in this article. All the reader is informed is that an injuction was lifted which allowed newspapers to report it, there's no information on what actually happened, nor is there any mention of the massive media storm and following calls for him to be stripped of his captaincy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.1.36.199 (talk) 10:59, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- I certainly agree that it is lacking in the mention of the media storm, so I'll add something on that. Not sure whether more details of the affair itself should be added, because people do have affairs - the notable aspect here is the tabloid reaction.--A bit iffy (talk) 10:37, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

"On 3 October 2010, The News of the World printed an apology to Miss Perroncel for invading her private life, and accepted that the claims against Terry and her were untrue."
this is not what the article says - it states the NOTW apologised for printing Miss Perroncel's *personal details* and that it was these details, not the allegations, which were 'largely untrue'. It is not the allegations themselves - which have been confirmed by Perroncel in other tabloids - which are untrue. Removing mention of parental brushes with the law
I've removed mention of these incidents. To focus on the older Terrys being petty crooks without mentioning anything to do with what sort of relationship they have with JT, stikes me as a case of WP:COATRACK. This was especially so given that the version I removed talks about the father being "exposed" as a drug dealer without mentioning the sentencing judges criticism of the NotW's sting operation and how the crime would never have happenned without their setting Terry senior up.--Peter cohen (talk) 18:04, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
without being john terry's dad, the case wold have received no news coverage. further, ost news outlets reported it alongside pictures of and reporting on terry himself. the two are heavily and inextricably interlinked. case of WP:THESE'S ALWAYS ON WHICH CAN JUSTIFY MY BIAS OR CENSORSHIP 81.96.245.225 (talk) 16:32, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Family and personal life
To have this section omitting most of the - heavily cited - negative press coverage about this player, whilst including the positive column inches like his 'Dad of the Year' award and autobiography income is frankly laughable and a gross violation of WP:NPOV.
For the article to include the Peroncel affair but not, for example, the court case for the doorman attack (leading to his highly publicised omission from an England squad) is frankly totally contradictory; either get rid of the lot (which would render this article seriously deficient) or include it.
All of the incidents involving his family members are valid since they were only notable through Terry - the BBC article on his father's cocaine conviction begins 'John Terry's dad...' for example.
As had been noted above and not corrected, various papers apologised for breeching Peroncel's privacy - they did NOT, as this article previously claimed, apologise to Terry or refute any of the allegations made or reports about the superinjunction.
I've endeavored to correct this and put as many citations from reputable sources rather than scandal rags as possible Jw2036 (talk) 10:59, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- What Terry's parents do is not relevant to this article, since none of it involves him. They aren't independently notable people, and I see no need to mention what they've done on their son's page. SteveO (talk) 15:57, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yes dont think a bunch of articles about his parents will be useful, but more sources to balance out his public image are certaintly neccessary. You should also propose some changes to the article itself where the opinion is rather slanted.Millertime246 (talk) 16:06, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Video footage
Having looked and read a bit in to the video footage, am I right that all that's apparently available is side footage of his face without any audio (of him speaking)? My assumption when I first read our description is the video footage included some audio (perhaps unclear or poor quality), not that the allegations were made relying solely on side on lip reading. (I presume we don't actually know what evidence the CPS has, whether it's just this or more.) Nil Einne (talk) 11:12, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

In the career statistics table, the total appearances reads 537 whereas it actually is 547..
I did my research and heres where the mistakes arise..
1.season 1998-99:the appearances are totalled wrong-it shows 6 instead of 7(2+3+1+1)
2.The table doesnt show community shield appearances which is another reason for the discrepancy..i suggest either adding a community shield column or mentioning below that the stats do not include the community shield appearances..season 2005-06 should show a community shield appearance..
3.season 2006-07 also has been totalled wrong-it shows 46 instead of 44(28+4+2+10)..but here again the correct total would be 45 as there was a community shield appearance
4.season 2008-09 has a mistake in the FA cup column..the correct number of appearances is 4 but it shows 2 and hence the total appearances for the season would be 51 and not 49
5.season 2009-10 FA cup appearances shows 4 instead of 5 and again there is a totaling error here it shows 46 but should be 51(37+5+1+8)counting the correction in the FA cup..also in the same season a community shield appearance must be accounted for in the table or mentioned below..
6.2010-11 also should have a community shield appearance..
If these errors are changed then the correct total appearances would be 547 and not 537.. i collected the data from: http://www.chelseafc.com/page/PlayerProfileDetail/0,,10268~5593,00.html http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/8931/john-terry?cc=4716 I kindly request you to make the changes.. thank you.. John Terry celebration meme
I'm giving this a bit of thought and feel, having lasted this long, the internet meme John Terry kicked off with his celebration of Chelsea's Champion's League triumph last season has been widely reported and is notable enough to mention perhaps as a contribution to popular culture.
I notice the incident itself merits mentioning in the article but the meme and how it has spread and been reported has not.
There are a good few sources:
http://www.empireonline.com/empireblogs/words-from-the-wise/post/p1235
Also this inident where Terry is lampooned by a Sligo Rovers fan: http://metro.co.uk/2012/10/27/john-terry-shows-up-to-celebrate-sligo-rovers-irish-league-title-win-608417/#ixzz2BxNanM96
I would suggest adding the line:
"this led to a popular internet meme lampooning Terry's behaviour." with a reference from above.
Also a section
In Popular Culture
Immediately after Terry's celebration with his Chelsea teammates after their 2012 UEFA Champions League Final victory a popular internet meme lampooning his behaviour appeared on the internet, becoming one of the most popular online jokes in 2012.[2] Terry has been pictured taking part in great moments in history and fiction. These included the fall of the Berlin Wall, the freeing of Nelson Mandela and the triumph of Rocky Balboa.[3] [4] [5] Over the summer of 2012 this developed into his celebrating current sporting achievements such as 2012 Olympics medal wins by Team GB.[6]
The joke reached its height when in October 2012, a Sligo Rovers fan donned a John Terry mask and full Chelsea kit, invading the pitch. He was photographed celebrating with his team winning the 2012 League of Ireland.[7] [8]

Champions League and Europa Cup achievements - Why does the article say Terry won both competitons? In football, you are only considered as being a 'winner' if you were part of the final match day squad. As Terry was suspended for the former, and injured for the later, he would not of recieved an official medal (but had to of requested one to be made) and is therefore not considered an official winner. Thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.254.146.36 (talk) 06:57, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

The 'sarcasm defence'.
In relation to the racial abuse allegations, John Terry's defence in court became known as the 'sarcasm defence'. [Natasha Henry The Observer, Saturday 14 July 2012 19.05 BST] He claimed that he was only “sarcastically repeating” a racist slur that Ferdinand mistakenly thought he had used [...Jul 11, 2012 07:07 By Mirror Football] [www.telegraph.co.uk/.../John-Terry-trial-He-should-not-be-in-court-says- Ashley-Cole.html 11 Jul 2012 ... He denies a racially aggravated public order offence, saying that he was sarcastically repeating the slur that Ferdinand mistakenly thought he had used.][“merely repeating it in a sarcastic manner” Video report by ITV News' Juliet Bremner]According to Duncan Perry, the counsel for the prosecution, Terry's case was that the offending words were “uttered by way of sarcastic exclamation" in response to a "perceived false accusation made by Mr Ferdinand to the effect that he, the defendant, had used the term 'black cunt' ". [Caroline Davies The Guardian, Monday 9 July 2012 20.54 BST] Kiwicherryblossom (talk) 16:58, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
- I added the content... see Terry maintained that he used the words as a form of sarcasm and that he was questioning what he thought had been an allegation of racism from Ferdinand and a reference. Thanks. Starship.paint (talk) 03:20, 20 December 2013 (UTC).
Thanks. Much appreciated. I wonder if it might be useful to include a couple of the references? ....Also, there's a slight but possibly significant inaccuracy in the statement that an Independent Regulatory Commission "labelled Terry's defence as "improbable, implausible and contrived""...... In the Commission's written ruling at 7.8 it says, "There are then further aspects of Mr. Terry‟s defence that the Commission finds improbable, implausible and contrived ..." They are not referring to Terry's defence as a whole but to specific aspects of it. For example, the "improbable" in the phrase "improbable, implausible and contrived" refers specifically to the Commission's view (in a nutshell) that it was "improbable" that John Terry would have sworn at someone who had falsely accused him of racism. (7.8 (i)) .... Maybe replace with "labelled aspects of Terry's defence as "improbable, implausible and contrived"? Kiwicherryblossom (talk) 20:11, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- I already added this as a reference, and I don't think more are necessary to cite that he used sarcasm, one is enough. Added in the "aspects of..", thanks. Starship.paint (talk) 04:11, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I hadn't spotted the Mirror reference. You're right, one is enough. Thanks for adding the "aspects of". Kiwicherryblossom (talk) 15:50, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
I'd like to propose that the last paragraph of the section 'Racial abuse allegations', featuring a quote from the Daily Telegraph be completely removed as it appears to conflict with Wikipedia's NPOV policy. It is an opinion piece by sports journalist Paul Hayward, but is cited as an apparently neutral summing up of the consequences of the incident and therefore dresses up opinion as fact. It is not a fact, for example, that the incident "shed more light on the fantasy world of Ashley Cole". It is, of course, reasonable to suppose that the incident and its consequences "inflicted much distress on the Ferdinand family"; but that is also likely to be true for the Terry family. In addition, Paul Hayward's expressed view that "black" is a "vile" word is (I hope) not one that most people would share. Kiwicherryblossom (talk) 20:29, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Highest scorer of all time?
In the 2013-14 section, it states that John Terry is the highest scorer of all time for a defender. I assume this should read "the highest-scoring defender in the history of the Premier League", but some sort of reference would be good to have.ScarabusHigh (talk) 21:09, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

26th minute
I've edited the section about him leaving the pitch in his last game on the 26th minute. I know its symbolic but its technically wrong. The board went up when the clock read 26:xx, which is the 27th minute (0.xx being the first minute) and according to the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39912027 '28' Substitution, Chelsea. Gary Cahill replaces John Terry.') Terry left the pitch on the 28th minute. I'm sure someone will edit it back to 26th minute but it'd be wrong. I'd suggest putting 'after the 26th minute' if anything, to be technically correct. brob (talk) 17:36, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Proposed removal of 'runner-up' awards in Honours
I would like to propose the removal of the runner-up medals received from the honours section of the article. Similarly decorated players such as Frank Lampard, Petr Čech, Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, Ronaldinho etc. do not have such honours listed as they are vastly insignificant in comparison to the major honours won. Comparatively, it would be appropriate for a player like Dean Ashton to have runner-up medals included, as it is arguably the greatest major honour achievement in his career. Formulaonewiki (talk) 13:52, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
- Just because those articles don't include them *at present* doesn't mean they shouldn't. To say runner-ups should only be included for less successful players is too subjective for an encyclopedia, IMO. They should be notable in their own right, irrespective of "proper" honours. In the Aston Villa subsection, please change "in Championship play-off" to "in the Championship play-off final", and link it to 2018 English Football League play-offs or 2018 English Football League play-offs#Championship. --95.44.50.222 (talk) 09:50, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Could you please change the following, under Style of Play: While some pundits, such as Chris Wright of ESPN, Tom Sheen of The Independent or Robin Bairner of Goal.com, have cited Terry's technique as a weakness, due to his lack of elegance in possession and his reluctance to carry the ball out from the back...
I am Tom Sheen and I've not said his technique is a weakness, if you read the article cited (https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/john-terry-captained-chelsea-for-the-500th-time-on-saturday-but-is-he-the-best-centre-back-of-the-9806372.html) you will see that I wrote... Terry has always been perceived as a bit of a plodder when on the ball, because he doesn't bring the ball out of defence, but he is an exceptionally two-footed footballer. Watch him closely during a game and Terry will show off a range of passing with either foot. Playing on the left side of the defence for much of his career, he is as adept with his left as he is with his right.
Could you please remove my name from the top paragraph and perhaps add in: Tom Sheen of The Independent noted that Terry was an "exceptionally two-footed footballer", one who is "as adept with his left as he is with his right".
Thank you very much and keep up the great work

This photo MUST be replaced. It looks extraordinarily ridiculous and has aged well beyond its expiration date. I am sure we can find consensus for even a slightly more current photo. Krazytea(talk) 20:55, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
