This page needs some wiki clean up, due to spelling mistakes, errors in grammar, and confusion. Looking for appropriate clean up tags...
- Added a shorten and a general clean up tag.
- The shorten clean up tag may have been used incorrectly
- however it seems that the Political Career should be split up into sections due to it's length compared to the rest of the article. I'm unable to edit it - I'm not familiar with Australian Politics.
- general clean up tag is for any other general clean up. Sorry if I didn't use them effectively - hit me up on my talk page if I didn't.

Neutrality of article and lack of citations
[edit]The article has some good facts towards the end, but apears to lack neutrality. Whilst some of the earlier the facts may be correct; the article would be significantly improved through proper use of citations to prove claims of Mr Ryan's stance on social issues, and his ability to influence public policy from the Upper House of a non-Governmental party. Jherschel (talk) 06:14, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Significant additional citations have been added addressing the concerns of previous editors — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nswpollie (talk • contribs) 03:32, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Fine. Add in all Ryan's speeches in the Upper House. It just means that they will be tagged as self-published sources, which should be avioded for biographies of living persons. Perhaps they can removed after his obituary is published. Rangasyd (talk) 11:20, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
NSW Hansard is hardly a self published work. They are the unedited, independently prepared transcripts of Parliamentary proceedings — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.51.104.244 (talk) 23:42, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I have removed some of the requests for further third party sources where references to Hansard sufficiently document that Mr Ryan held particular views on social issues. Mr Ryan's work in regard to consumer protection is variously acknowledged in Hansard by both Government and Opposition Members including the actual Minister for Consumer Affairs - I'll find the reference and include it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nswpollie (talk • contribs) 01:56, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hey. I realise that this is not easy, and I am not being malicious, but I do suspect that you may be a little too close to Mr Ryan to provide objective (neutral) opinion on the matter. For the record, I've copied an extract of Wikipedia's policy on citing oneself, which is essentially what quoting Ryan's own speeches in Hansard is.
- Citing oneself
- Policy shortcuts:WP:COS, WP:SELFCITE, WP:SELFCITING, See also: Wikipedia:Autobiography
- Editing in an area in which you have professional or academic expertise is not, in itself, a conflict of interest. Using material you yourself have written or published is allowed within reason, but only if it is relevant and conforms to the content policies. Excessive self-citation is strongly discouraged. When in doubt, defer to the community's opinion. In any case, citations should be in the third person and should not place undue emphasis on your work, giving proper due to the work of others as in a review article.
- Having said all that, in my opinion there is excessive self-citation from Hansard. Another editor has also commented along similar lines...... this is the community speaking. One way of best editing the article to give it balance is to also provide criticism of Ryan, which surely as a politician would have happened. Often, the media or journals and books are used to provide this criticism, and provide an independent view away from the partisan nature of politics. It's up to you on how you wish to proceed, but you may wish to keep this in mind when editing this and other articles on Wikipedia. As to removing the templates, they're best left there until third party sources can be found - and Ryan's OWN speeches in the Parliament are not really good sources. Cheers and Happy New Year. Relevance of cousins to article and lack of citation of evdience of the relationship
[edit]I have removed the following phrase from the Background section "He is a first cousin to both Irish artist, John Ryan, Irish movie actress Kathleen Ryan and grand nephew of Irish Civil War activist Séamus Ryan who was a member of the Irish Senate (1931-1933).[citation needed]" This claim lacks not only a citation, but appears to have little relevance to that article about John Ryan. If a citation can be found that show the relationship between Ryan and the three named individuals and how they may have impacted Ryan's views/career, etc; they may be worthy of inclusion. In the interim, it's probably best to exclude and discuss here. Rangasyd (talk) 09:05, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
