Problems of accuracy and sourcing

[edit]

A user inserted the following in the article:

How can a man born ca. 1750 get married in 1753? The author has connected our subject to the wrong wife. Our subject actually married Phoebe Ramsey, daughter of Josiah Ramsey.

I moved it here because commentary like this is discussion of the article, not article content.

The article is largely unsourced and the user didn't cite sources, so it's not clear what to do with this comment. Does anyone have reliable sources? --Orlady (talk) 19:10, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for not inserting my comment correctly, but I thought it important to point out what was an obvious error. The reason I didn't make a proper correction, which would amount to re-writing the entire part about his alleged wife and children, is that I'm working from secondary sources, ones that have been accepted by the family for so long, I can't seem to find the original, primary documentation, but I've started looking. I've put out the word on various genealogy mailing lists and boards for help in finding the source(s), and one person has responded that the information is in the Draper Manuscripts. Unfortunately, I don't have easy access to the microfilms. Another source mentioned is "Montgomery and James of Southwest Virginia" by David B. Trimble of Austin, TX, and it's cited here: http://www.montyhistnotes.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I38958&tree=CMSI

There was a John Montgomery who married an Agnes Crockett, but he died in 1805 in Virginia. The "famous" John Montgomery died in 1794 in Lyon Co., KY.

Lieut. Col. John Montgomery, pioneer and founder of Clarksville, Tennessee was the spouse of Phebe Ramsey, daughter of Josiah Ramsey. John and Phebe had four children, two sons and two daughters, William, Joseph, Margaret and Elizabeth. This link is from a Revolutionary War application naming the surviving grandson of Lieut. Col. John Montgomery, i.e. Jonah H Montgomery, spouse of Mary Martha Frances Lindsey. Jonah and Mary Lindsey Montgomery lived in Fulton County, Kentucky.

Lieut. Col. John Montgomery's widow, Phebe, is found living in 1799 at Montgomery County, Tennessee, the county named in honor of Lieut. Col. John Montgomery. Her son, William, appears on the same page with Phebe.

It is thought by many that Lieut. Col. John Montgomery was the son of William Montgomery and his spouse Marguerite Briarleigh (often seen as Margaret Brawley or Braley), though the proof of this parentage has not come to my attention.

Deleted incorrect information about spouse and children. This was the wrong John Montgomery. The John Montgomery who was spouse of Anne Agnes Crockett died at Wytheville, Virginia in 1805. This information does not apply to Lieut. Col. John Montgomery, founder of Clarksville, Tennessee.

On November 28, 1753,[dubiousdiscuss] he married Anne Agnes Crockett (born November 28, 1736), daughter of Samuel Crocket II and Esther Thompson.[1]

John Montgomery and Anne Agnes Crockett Montgomery had thirteen children:[1]

  1. Rev. John Montgomery (January 21, 1758). Married unknown Finley.
  2. Esther Montgomery (February 8, 1775) married Robert Montgomery
  3. James Montgomery (January 28, 1759)
  4. Samuel Montgomery (January 18, 1760) Married Polly Bishop. (This supposed union is unproven to be the child of John and Anne Agnes Crockett Montgomery)
  5. Joseph Montgomery (April 25, 1762) Married Elizabeth 'Betsey' Draper.
  6. Catherine Montgomery (January 20, 1772) Married Major Joseph Crockett, son of Major Samuel and Jean Armstrong Crockett
  7. Silas Montgomery (May 27, 1773) died young
  8. Stephen Montgomery (January 20, 1775) married Polly Mears
  9. William Montgomery (September 22, 1776) Married Letitia Fowland.
  10. Rachel Montgomery (October 2, 1779) Married Major Samuel Graham, son of Robert and Mary Craig Graham.
  11. Nancy Montgomery (January 10, 1782) Married James Graham, brother of the above Major Samuel Graham.
  12. Elizabeth Montgomery (1784) Married Manassa Friel.
  13. Ann Montgomery (1786) Married Capt. James Craig, son of John Craig
