Bruce and the Scottish Church.

[edit]

Clement's excommunication of Robert Bruce did not have any effect on his claim to the crown. He received almost immediate absolution from Bishop Robert Wishart of Glasgow, and was crowned with the full support of the Scottish church, the papal inderdict notwithstanding. Red Comyn at Falkirk

[edit]

I noticed his betrayal at The Battle of Falkirk, or at least his withdrawl of his troops, was not included in this page. --70.251.118.52 00:13, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a myth. The Scottish light horse at Falkirk did not 'withdraw'; they were driven from the field by the heavy English cavalry. Be wary of the Blind Harry view of history and its modern 'Braveheart' incarnation. Rcpaterson 22:36, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move this article?

[edit]

As "John Comyn" redirects here, it would be in keeping with normal Wikipedia practice to move this article to "John Comyn", treat this title and other plausible alternatives as redirects, but keep John Comyn (disambiguation). PatGallacher 17:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. I think it would be better, if anything, that John Comyn direct to John Comyn (disambiguation). This John Comyn isn't that much more famous that the others. Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 18:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The logic of your position is to move John Comyn (disambiguation) to John Comyn. Actually, I think this one is more famous than the others by a clear margin, because of his violent clash with Bruce. What do other people think? PatGallacher 19:05, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. There's nothing wrong with having John Comyn redirect to John Comyn (disambiguation). At any rate, it is customary on wiki to refer to the nobility by their titles, in this case "Lord of Badenoch". Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 19:17, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not sufficiently more famous than his father, for example, to justify John Comyn redirecting to this subject rather than to the dab page. Red Comyn redirects here, that's sufficient I think. Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It is my opinion that John Comyn should redirect to the Disambiguation page, as this is clearly a matter of multiple persons known by the same name needing disambiguation. --Jon Cates 00:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree that John Comyn should redirect to the disambiguation page. I think the Red Comyn is perhaps somewhat more notable than the other John Comyns, but not so much so as to bypass disambiguation. Choess 18:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Competitors?

[edit]

Some confusion here between the father and the son. The Competitor was Black not Red. Rcpaterson 23:20, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

B-class assessment

[edit]

The article does not yet meet all of the six B-Class criteria. Attention is needed in adding in-text citations; with 2281 words there is currently only one footnote. By doing this, we will likely provide clarity on the disputed content as well. Thanks to everyone for your help. Senator2029 • talk 06:20, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Death and civil war

[edit]

In the last sentence of the Death in Dumfries section:

"The death of his father plunged Scotland into a brief but bloody civil war, largely concluded by 1308, but with political reverberations that were to last for decades."

Is the civil war referred to in this sentence that described here Wars of Scottish Independence#King Robert the Bruce: 1306–1328? If so where does the claim of it being largely concluded in 1308 come from? I feel that there should be a link to the war in question or at least a citation to back up these dates. Discussion at John Comyn

[edit]

John Comyn is currently a disambiguation page. A discussion is taking place to decide if it should be moved to John Comyn (disambiguation) and if John Comyn should redirect here as the primary topic. Sahaib3005 (talk) 14:46, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
