[edit]John Brown is an unknown bridge expert. At least, The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge didn't heard of he.
- He can't be unknown if he's had books published: his readers know of him. And so did all of the Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association, apparently. Perhaps the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge has something to learn from this encyclopedia. :-) —msh210 04:28, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
- doesn't mean that he is necessarily notable.Tetron76 (talk) 16:28, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
- The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge (OEB) did hear "of he" (sic). See OEB Edition 1 (1964), page 53; also OEB Edition 2 (1971), page 571; also OEB Edition 3 (1976), page 597; and also OEB Edition 4 (1984), page 576. His bio is not included in the 5th and 6th Editions of the OEB. Also, Brown is included in The Bridge Players' Encyclopedia (1967) on page 49. Newwhist (talk) 22:49, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

notability
[edit]While I am not sure what impact killing defence had in the 50's there is a much better known book by Kelsey with the same title. This is at best unreferenced as to notability even referenced it may not be sufficient.Tetron76 (talk) 16:28, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
- It seems you misread the title of Brown's books; non is titled like "a much better known book by Kelsey with the same title"; I presume you meant "Killing Defence at Bridge". For greater clarity and potential consideration as to Brown's notability, I have added the reference to the evaluation rating given by the 5th and 6th editions of the ACBL Official Encyclopedia of Bridge to Brown's book, "Winning Defence". Newwhist (talk) 23:42, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes I had read the book title as "killing defence" The references have cleared the page up enough for me to remove the notability tag.Tetron76 (talk) 16:27, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Father of George Spencer-Brown
[edit]Worth linking this page to his son's here: [1] Son changed surname in adulthood. Parentage can be verified from GSB's autobiography: [2] --5.80.65.151 (talk) 15:38, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
- Agreed. John Brown trained GSB in both bridge and chess and was instrumental in GSB's wish to publish and be remembered as an author. His cult classic book, 'Laws of Form' was released in 1969, and continues to be influential in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, narrative analysis, physics, and more. See https://lof50.com for further details on the work. PPTWizard (talk) 15:39, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
