last victory by a privateer

[edit]

In 1968, Siffert drove into the F1 history books by winning the 1968 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch in Rob Walker Racing Team's Lotus 49B, beating Chris Amon's Ferrari into second place after a race-long battle. This is regarded as the last GP victory by a privateer.

What about Stewart's victory in 1970 (Jarama) with a private March bought by Tyrrell Racing? Woodcote (talk) 08:49, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The feeling, as expressed here, seems to be that the support Tyrrell was receiving from Ford, Elf, and Goodyear placed them at least among the semi-works ranks. I have amended the text to say that Siffert's victory is considered to be the last win for a genuine privateer, and added this ref. I have updated the Lotus 49 article likewise. Pronunciation

[edit]

Can someone add an IPA pronunciation of his name? I don't know if it's French or German, but according to his children's names (Véronique and Philippe), my guess is that it is French. Also, most of the population of his hometown Fribourg speaks French (63.6%) as their first language, German is the second (21.2%).

And is he of French descent or German descent? --Njsgdsza (talk) 10:23, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You've fluffed his racing resume!

[edit]

I'm sorry, he did not win the 1966 24 Hour of LeMans! He did not win the 1967 24 Hour of LeMans!

1966, Siffert finished 4th overall, 21 laps down, in the works 906. 1967, he finished 5th overall, 30 laps down, in the works 907. If you please, Jo Siffert never scored an overall win, at LeMans. '66 and '67, those were classified, under-category acknowledgements. Showing Siffert, an overall winner at LeMans, sullies and detracts from his overall wins, 1968 and 1971, in Formula 1, and Porsche's 1-2-3 at Daytona.

It should be noted, because the Porsche people crammed its works drivers, into their lead car, both Jo Siffert and Hans Herrmann won the 1968 24 hours at Daytona, simultaneously finishing runner up, 2nd place! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.138.87.53 (talk) 17:04, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
