Discrepancies from despatches relating to Pallas
[edit]The original despatches on the Pallas action ("No. 15231". The London Gazette. 15 February 1800. {{cite magazine}}

(help)) give 22 casualties on the Loire by my reckoning - either the Marine hasn't been counted, or James assumes that the wounded seaman who later died was also counted in the two seamen killed. The despatches also give the names of the two vessels which initially engaged Pallas as HM Sloops Harpy and Fairy. The two vessels with Loire were the frigate HMS Danae and HM Sloop Railleur (so whether the description of a squadron of frigates is really accurate seems a little - doubtful, though the commander of Fairy initially states that that is what he believed the three newcomers to be). Interestingly Loire had a lieutenant of the Russian Navy aboard during the action. David Underdown (talk) 16:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
