Did Pulyui actually discover X-Rays?

[edit]

Since this is the decisive question concerning this physicist I would like to let people having doubts about it refer to the investigations on this topic. The most thorough coverage of this question in Ukrainian that I could find are a dissertation:

  • Рокіцький Олександр Михайлович. Іван Пулюй у світовій науці й культурі: Дис... канд. іст. наук: 07.00.07 / Тернопільський держ. технічний ун-т ім. Івана Пулюя — К., 2002. — 175арк.

and two books:

  • Гайда Р. П.
— ISBN 5-7707-8500-4.

There is also a German translation: Gajda R. , Plazko R. Johann Puluj Ratsel des universalen Talents, EuroWelt-Verlag, L´wiw 2001, ISBN 966-7343-04-9. These books are available at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. I could only have a look at the latter two. They seem quite comprehensive and the point the author makes is the Pulyui actually did see the X-rays, but did not recognize them as what they are. He himself did not take the credit for the discovery. Some of more aggresive and resentful claims on Pulyuis being the first come from his biographers, as Gajda points out. A short synophis in English by Gajda on Pulyui and X-rays can be found here. There is also a number of publications in German and Austrian press about Pulyui, the references to these can be found in the German wikipedia article on Pulyui. I am removing the {{who}} tags I put in yesterday and will come back to deal with the WP:WEASEL wording in due course. Thanks for this. --Old Moonraker (talk) 09:06, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am now reading Гайда Р. П. Іван Пулюй та становлення науки про Х-промені. — Львів, 1997. — 62с. — (Препр. / НАН України; Інститут фізики конденсованих систем; 97-17U). The book name translates to English as Ivan Pulyui and the establishment of the X-ray science. When I'm finished, I'm planning first to expand the section on Pulyui's contribution to X-Ray in German wikipedia article, then here eventually. I wish there were any sources in English to cite, but I didn't come across anything so far. Silin2005 (talk) 19:25, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia puts the first production of X-rays to William Morgan in 1785. While there have been many others ever since, obviously nobody discovered the spectacular possibility to obtain photographs from inside the body which was the source of the "veritable sensation" Röntgen created.

Rename the Article?

[edit]

The spelling of his last name on this article is completely different from the way it is usually spelled, and the way that Puluj himself spelled in in the Latin script: Puluj. Although a google search shows somewhat higher links to the spelling "Pulyui" [1] vs. "Puluj" [2] (475 vs. 414) most of the links to "Pulyui" are related to this wikipedia article. In contrast, Puluj is used by, for example, the name of the University in Ternopil named after him : [3] ("Ternopil State Ivan Puluj Technical University"), the Ukrainian Weekly newspaper :[4] and academic publications such as these: [5] [6] [7]. Puluj has descendents living in England, among other places, who use the spelling "Puluj". I propose changing the name of the article and will do so in a couple of days if there are no objections.Faustian (talk) 13:57, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No objections, but I waited a bit before making the changes. I checked googlebook results and it was 79 hits for Puluj [8] vs. 76 for Pulyui [9]. Googlescholar has 226 hits for Ivan Puluj [10] vs. only 49 for Ivan Pulyui [11].Faustian (talk) 15:05, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
