WikiProject class rating

[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as stub, and the rating on other projects was brought up to Stub class. BetacommandBot 09:54, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reclassed to "start" after rewrite -- which looks nice, thanks! Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 17:53, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Typo:

In the "==Career==" - chapter the second paragraph should read:

In a paper titled P', ...

instead of

In a paper titled P, ...

__________

explanation: The Prime (') at the P denotes the shadow wave of the P-wave.

Thanks very much.

Regards!

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 12:49, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Typo:

In the opening intro paragraph, please change "core's" to "cores".

NOT DONE - core's means "of the core", which appears to be the correct meaning in the context. If there were two or more outer cores, then we'd need "cores'" which you don't seem to be suggesting, and that change would in any case need a reference. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:04, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Huh?

[edit]

This article starts: "Inge Lehmann ForMemRS (May 13, 1888 – February 21, 1993) was a Danish seismologist and geophysicist who postulated the Earth's inner core." Who postulated what about the Earth's inner core? That it exists presumably, but if so, then it should say so - for all I know he postulated that it was made of green cheese. Reminds me of the guy in upstate New York who commented to me that he liked the area because it had topography - my response was everywhere has topography, presumably he meant it had interesting topography or hilly topography or topography of some noteworthy characteristics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.158.48.13 (talk) 18:08, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

True, although at the time I thought the context was explicit enough to make it clear. My mistake. Context is a must. I forgot "the existance of". I shall correct it now. I chose "postulated" instead of "discovered" due to the ambiguous nature of the later in science, and according to the Webster Dictionary definition: Postulate 1: To assume or claim as true, existent, or necessary: depend upon or start from the postulate of. 2: To assume as a postulate or axiom (as in logic or mathematics). Thanks for your comment, and please tell me if you find it satisfactory this time. Jordissim (talk) 00:49, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to simplify the language by avoiding "postulate" and the somewhat unnatural sounding "an earth's inner core" altogether. Hope it works.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 01:01, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ForMemRS

[edit]

I suggest the "ForMemRS" part be moved to the infobox and not be the first word after the title, it's clearly not that important. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.219.138.38 (talk) 09:55, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

University of Calgary/Introductory Geology (Fall 2017) - Group 5

[edit]

As part of our assignment we have critiqued this article to help improve the information available to the public:

What follows is our group’s critique of the article based on the following questions:

1. Check a few citations, do the links work? Is there any paraphrasing or plagiarism from the article?

- Number 4 and 5 links direct you to web pages that no longer exist. Number 15’s link directs you to a university sign in site, of which we were unable to access. Number 15’s link directs you to a university sign in site, of which we were unable to access. - We also found that parts of the Early Life and Education section was closely paraphrased from the cited articles 8, 9 and 10.

2. Is there anything missing that could be added? - Information pertaining to the progressive co-educational school she attended was left out of the article (cited from Article 6). - There was no information on how difficult being a female scientist was in the early 20th century and how this subsequently affected her. It does not give proper explanation to why she took so long to get her degree. - There is no information given as to what caused her poor health. - There was no specific information on how she proved her theories about the Earth.

3. How can the article be improved? - The section on Inge’s early life and education is not in chronological order, this would make the article more organized. - The sentence structure could be improved throughout the article to flow in one voice. - The comments on both her shyness and her lack of a family are distracting, as there was no mention of why she had no family nor what impact her shyness had on her career. It would be best to explain that the reason she chose not to have a family was due to the fact that women at that time either had a career or a family and not both. - The two main paragraphs in early life and education have very similar content that is described in a slightly different way. Recent edit

[edit]

I propose to revert this recent edit by User:Lemon517, on the following grounds.

  1. The newly introduced ref scientificwomen to me seems to be a Wikipedia mirror.
  2. Lehmann was not a chairman of the Danish Geophysical Society between 1941 and 1944, but twice, in 1941 and again in 1944. I am not certain this is relevant enough to add to the lead of the article. Also, please don't use "chairman" but instead "chair" or "she chaired".
  3. The remark that she was a pioneer in diversifying gender composition is unsourced. Who determined that she was?
  4. Strange use of language: "is best credited for".
  5. Strange use of language: "is recognised to be one of the longest-lived".
  6. Peacock language: "many influential members of high standing".
  7. Incomprehensible sentence to me: "Although at the time, social views about girls participating in intellectual studies was mentally harmful to them, Lehmann’s parents had placed her in a co-ed school." Also, unsourced.
  8. Unsourced, possibly conjecture: "she complained to her nephew Niles Groes about how many incompetent men she had to compete with- in vain".
  9. Unsourced: "Lehmann had a reported mental breakdown during her first year in 1911."
  10. Strange use of language: "They were unexpected locations due to the current theory that S-waves and some P-waves were deflected by the core creating a shadow area in which waves weren’t thought to pass through to." Also, sources removed that were present with the previously correctly formulated sentence.
  11. Title of paper changed from the correct P' to P'.
  12. Strange use of language: "She received the Medal of the Seismological Society of America as the first woman." Also, unsourced.

I am reluctant to revert because user @Wham2001: made some good changes since user @Lemon517:'s edit. Mark in wiki (talk) 10:25, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Will make the proper edits. Thank you. Lemon517 (talk) 14:10, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about my copyedits – I can remake them after you conclude on the content if needs be. Wham2010 (talk) 07:05, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have rescued, added and checked sources, changed some info, and did some copy-editing. Thanks for your edits, Lemon517, particularly those pertaining to Lehmann's difficulties within male-dominated studies in the early 20th century. Mark in wiki (talk) 10:31, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
