Roxanne Cooper of Pop Idol considered for deletion

[edit]

A discussion this contestant on Pop Idol is underway at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roxanne Cooper. --Rob 22:36, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ugly new layout

[edit]

Ummm yeah. And there is a lot of misinformation too.ZlatkoT 13:35, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Someone please stop this dickhead Pabs from witholding information/reverting to misinformation, geez this page will never be considered as a featured article for elitists like that, i've given up.ZlatkoT 14:08, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please, tell us where's that 'a lot of misinformation' in order to improve the article. If you want to collaborate with wikipedia, do it including accurate, adequate and relevant information, not bashing others. I'll keep reverting that changes you made and I explained why in the editing comment. Greetings. Pabs, 7:19 01/07/06

Each piece needs to be reviewed, not the mass edits and reverts we've seen recently. For example, the 'accurate, adequate and relevant information' Pabs put back with the last revert has at least three defunct websites (Belgium, Croatia, and Greece, which I've checked and commented out) and an inaccurate site reference (russia, but the previous reference appears wrong too). Whether or not there is a slash at the end of a URL doesn't seem like an issue worth the effort either way -- it's valid either way, so why worry about it? And there's got to be a better way to display the data than the table we've got now. -- ArglebargleIV 06:16, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • I've reverted and will revert the information about Buryatia, US and Australia at the end of the table. I included the 'defunct' links because they are there in the articles of other reality shows like Big Brother or Star Academy. I supposed it should be useful to know where they were located, as a research source (for example, that people using the Internet way back machine) I think the best way to display this kind of information, as you will be able to see in almost all the wikiarticles about reality shows (Star Academy, Big Brother, Survivor, Big Brother VIP), is in tables. It's a matter of consensus, aesthetic and similarity. And the site of Russia you deleted is the official. Greetings. Pabs
      • If a website is known to be defunct, then it should be marked that way.
        • How? Let's make a consensus. Pabs 17:06 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
      • The Buryatia involvement in the Russian 'Idol' show would need some source -- does Russia in the article mean the entire Russian Federation, or just part of it? Offhand, it appears to me that including Buryatia is similar to including "and North Dakota" in a description of American Idol, but information on either side would be useful.
        • Buryatia is a recognised republic, as is Ukraine & Belarus which were only included in their respective seasons as audition cities. 'SuperStar has contestants from the US & Australia, I think I would know since I watched the entire season from the first episode to the grand final, so stop making out like I don't know anything about Idol, it is very childish of you.' PS Argle, what do you think of the US seasons? it looks better too excellent idea.ZlatkoT 14:39, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
          • Buryatia is not a State as Ukraine or Belarus are (they are self-sufficient and totally independent states recognized thus by all political, economic, sanitary and social international organizations) but a part of the Russia Federation, so it's not necessary to remark it, as the other countries don't remark their different divisions. Russia means in the article what it is, what you'll find in the link it's linking to. Pabs 17:06 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
      • For the Arab World 'Idol' show -- were there any contestants from either the US or Australia? It does appear the auditions for season 3 in Los Angeles and Sydney, and season 4 auditions will be happening in Los Angeles and Detroit.
        • SuperStar had auditions in some cities around the world but the countries taking part on it, watching and voting with an own voting telephone line (not the one for 'the rest of the world' that it has as it's a worldwide sat TV), are the ones from the Middle East. In fact, the semifinalist were: Samar Andeel (Egypt), Aida El Rahbani (Lebanon), Nancy Nasrallah (Lebanon), Rashel El Rasi (Lebanon), Hasna Zlagh (Morocco), Shahd Barmada (Syria), Asma Ben Ahmed (Tunisia), Asma Othmani (Tunisia), Fouzia El Betri (Tunisia), Olfa El Barhoumi (Tunisia), Yusra Hamzawi (Tunisia), Mohamed El Abd (Egypt), Mohamed Jamal (Egypt), Ahmed El Faleh (Iraq), Youssef Kazar (Iraq), Ibrahim Abd El Adheem (Libya), Hatem Adar (Morocco), Haitham El Shoumali (Palestine), Ibrahim El Hakami (Saudi Arabia), Anis Ltaief (Tunisia), Ayman Lseeq (Tunisia) Pabs 17:06 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
          • Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong - there were contestants that advanced from the auditions in Sydney and Los Angeles. Get your facts right please, it is so embarrassing. There is an international phone number to vote too, ao anyone & everyone in every nation can vote.ZlatkoT 16:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
            • First of all: chill, man :-) You're saying the same that I do. I said there were auditions in cities from several countries (SuperStar had auditions in some cities around the world), but that does not mean these countries were taking part in it. About the international number, that's what I said, again (voting with an own voting telephone line (not the one for 'the rest of the world' that it has as it's a worldwide sat TV))... people from all over the world could vote, but that does not mean the whole world were doing it. I could vote from my country, but my country was not involved in it ;-) With your thesis, SuperStar would be a reality show with the whole Earth participating :-S Pabs 19:30 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
              • You are not making any sense at all, Australian contestants were on the show and American contestants were on the show (please look at Ahmed El Faleh & Haitham El Shoumali) Throughout the three seasons there have been no Qatari or Yemeni contestants on the show, yet they still participate in voting. Future TV is available by satellite worldwide because of the huge arab diaspora, hence an international phone number. I refuse to justify this any further.ZlatkoT 01:17, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
                • Ahmed, from Iraq; Haitham, from Palestine. Middle East countries. It's like when a guy from Germany, but living in Australia, enters in Big Brother Germany. That does not mean Australia and Germany are doing a joined version of the show :-S According to you, it should be like:
Region Local name Official website Winner
WHOLE EARTH SuperStar Website

Just because FUTURE TV is a sat TV that can be watched in every continent and because they had a line for all the NOT MIDDLE EAST (they're saying it: it's a MidEast show) countries. Then, since that moment, all the TV shows that are broadcasted by a channel with satellite coverage, don't belong to any region but to the whole Earth. Illogical... and weird. I'm not making sense (according to you) because it has not sense :-) And I agree with you, it's better not justify it anymore :-þ Greetings. Pabs 22:34 GMT+1 2 JUL 06

      • The articles mentioned do use tables, and this probably should as well. My objection is to the format of the table, such as the column that is (nearly) filled with "Website". If a better format can be found, then the other articles can be updated. Maybe
Region Local name Winner
United States
Official Website
American Idol
      • or
Region Local name Winner
United States
Official Website
American Idol Season 1, 2002 : Kelly Clarkson
Season 2, 2003 : Ruben Studdard
Season 3, 2004 : Fantasia Barrino
Season 4, 2005 : Carrie Underwood
Season 5, 2006 : Taylor Hicks
        • So, what you propose is to detele the 'website' column in order to fuse it with another one. Then the question will be to decide with which one. Pabs 17:06 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
      • If the local name doesn't have an article of it's own (like Idool), don't link it to the current season, leave it unlinked -- have the separate season article links (like Idool 2003, Idool 2004) in the winners column. -- ArglebargleIV 13:43, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • Now, in the winners column we only have the name of the winner, and if it's linking to that person wikiarticle, we wont be able to link the season. Pabs 17:06 GMT+1 1 JUL 06
          • In both of my examples above, I have links in that box for both the season article and the winner article
            [[American Idol (Season 1)|Season 1, 2002]] : [[Kelly Clarkson]] is what is there. -- ArglebargleIV 15:29, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
            • Yep, I said 'now' ;-)

I'm considering starting it, with subprojects for each individual show - any thoughts on it? CrazyC83 04:59, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a WikiProject Idol series, so that all Idol related pages are consistent. Each contestant's page should be neutral and consistent with the other contestants of their season, Wikipedia should not favor one contestant over another, and having a WikiProject will help tremendously. Idol series map

[edit]

Is this based on auditions or TV coverage?

Pan arab Super Star includes (as TV coverage/voting/auditions): Syria, Irag, Jordan, Egypt, UAE, Tunisia (as TV coverage/voting) Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, Oman, Yemen, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya

Narodniy Artist also includes Ukraine

Super Idol also includes Cyprus

It was based on where it is filmed, but I've changed it to include TV coverage countries you just mentioned -- Astrokey44|talk 05:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is also such a series in mainland China, called Super Boy and Super Girl.
The map needs another update it seems. Der Eberswalder (talk) 17:52, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an idolpedia

[edit]

How to do it? Something like bulbapedia or lostpedia.

Gimli suggested a Wikia be started on this, so it now exists at Wikiasite:idol. Angela. 08:55, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, the tables don't seem to be formatted the same as Wikipedias, i've gone through some of the help pages but can't really get it working on Wikia.

Licensed and unlicensed versions

[edit]

I'm working on finding citations for this, but I believe that American Juniors was licensed by Fremantle Media. Also, the X-Factor was also licensed after-the-fact as a result of the resolution of the lawsuit between Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell, but, again, I'm looking for a citation on that. -- ArglebargleIV 02:54, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

American Juniors and X Factor are licensed by Fremantle, and should not be listed under "unlicensed." -User:Arual

Star search started in the USA in 1983... how can it be an "Unlicensed version"???

Attempt at table reformatting, and consensus

[edit]

I've put a (partially) reformatted version of the table & footnotes at User:ArglebargleIV/Idol series -- let's discuss it here. For the purposes of such discussion, I made some decisions about content issues. I'll continue to finish the formatting today. -- ArglebargleIV 19:58, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm done with formatting and getting the data together at User:ArglebargleIV/Idol series. Now, everybody can tell me what's wrong with it. :-) -- 15:05, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I'm going to move it into the main article...comments below, please. -- ArglebargleIV 00:04, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I like it! It's so nice, better than the last one :-) I have a question: what's the difference between "Current season" and "In progress"? Pabs 10:30 GMT+1 3 JULY 06

Explanation of reversion of edits

[edit]

I removed the following edit to the first paragraph :
The Idol series is watched more than the World Cup. [1]
because that isn't what the article says -- it said that more people watched American Idol than the World Cup in the US. -- ArglebargleIV 14:22, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Table format

[edit]

The table in the Pop Idol, Australian Idol, Idols (Denmark TV series)... pages all have an extra cell on top of the table. I tried fixing it, but couldn't figure it out. Can any HTML savvy Wikipedian fix the tables? Thanxs! =D Jumping cheese Contact 07:03, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blech, the doubly nested table syntax (with inverted loop, barrel roll, and fries) is ugly. I'll take a shot at fixing it. -- ArglebargleIV 15:14, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK -- that wasn't an empty cell, it was extra cell padding. However, I got rid of it, and simplified the table code as well. I've only changed Pop Idol for now, if it looks okay, I'll do the others that I can find later today. -- ArglebargleIV 16:04, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The table looks great. Thanxs for fixing it! ^_^ Jumping cheese Contact 20:01, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK! I'll start changing other pages, probably a few a day. -- ArglebargleIV 15:40, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanxs for volunteering! Take your time. =) Jumping cheese Contact 20:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with Idol series

[edit]

On December 2, 2006, Idol series was marked for deletion (the deletion discussion is here). Although it was kept, one of the concerns was that the article was largely unsourced. In order to forestall another (potentially successful) deletion attempt, I tried to find sources for the statements in the article. Unfortunately, I largely failed -- a lot of it seems like original research. Maybe somebody else can take a shot at it? Otherwise, a lot of it may have to be removed, if not the whole article someday. (For notice's sake, I placed a copy of this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Idol series.) -- ArglebargleIV 18:38, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:DSDS3.jpg

[edit]

Image:DSDS3.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

I'm certainly worried about the gallery of Idol logos in the page. It certainly clashes with WP:NFC. What can we do with this? - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 15:20, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image Image:Pop Idol logo.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Popularity

[edit]

I have removed this sentence from the first section:

"

The Idol franchise is the third most popular international franchise, behind only the The Weakest Link (number two) andWho Wants to Be a Millionaire? (number one) franchises, both of which also originated in the United Kingdom.[1]

"

The article referenced is four years old and I'm guessing the situation has changed a lot since then. I couldn't find any more up-to-date information. --Joey Roe (talk) 09:40, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hosts listed instead of Winners?

[edit]

Why did someone edited the list and replaced the winner from each country with the hosts? I think if something besides the shows name and broadcast station should be listed it should definitely be the winner as it then also indicates how many seasons country had and its the winner, you know the Idol that was crownded. Map

[edit]

In the map File:Countries with Idol series.svg, could anyone remove Pakistan? The show was actually designated but it was later cancelled and failed to launch. Perhaps a colour code for "cancelled" might be appropriate?

Idols (TV series)Idol (franchise) – This article summarizes the format of this franchise, but its not a specific "TV series" in its own right. Also, moving to the singular used in most sources and in the titles of the various country series. Netoholic @ 23:46, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Strongly support "(franchise)", but Weakly support / Neutral on "Idols" → "Idol". I definitely strongly support the move to "(franchise)" per the precedent set with other pages like Survivor (franchise) and Big Brother (franchise). However, some versions of the franchise call it "Idols" and some call it "Idol", and I'm not necessarily sure which one is most commonly used to refer to the global franchise as a whole. I weakly support that aspect. Paintspot Infez (talk) 14:44, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. "Franchise" makes sense, and so does "Idol". The first series (Pop Idol), the first international adaptation (Poland's Idol), and the most popular adaptation (American Idol) all used the singular "Idol", as do many (maybe most) others. When I serach "Algerie Idol" on Google, there isn't anything. So if it was launched, just put some links. And if it was launched, change the colour - it's not an upcoming season.
