NHL is ineligible in the olympics!

[edit]

Bad news! I've found this article from Sportsnet.ca. According to the IOC, the IIHF and the NHLPA, the NHL players will not participate in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Both Canada and the United States were deemed to select only amateur players to participate in the olympics. These players from a minor professional leagues, a major junior leagues or colleges such as AHL, ECHL, OHL, QMJHL, WHL, NCAA and more. Instead, the IOC has now expressed the position that the NHL's participation in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games is conditioned on our participation in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. This isn't new news. But it also isn't likely to be final. They did this last time. Chances are they will change their mind by fall like they did last time. It also already says this in the article. -DJSasso (talk) 11:58, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This page states that the men's tournament will start on the 13th, while the page for the men's tournament states that it will start on the 10th. The source given on that page does not actually say anything about the dates, while this page gives no sources. Is there any reliable source for the dates? 72.49.107.190 (talk) 23:49, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, this apparently got overlooked. The official site has a schedule posted that differs from the source used for this page, I will update our pages.18abruce (talk) 11:37, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that there is a women's semifinal game listed on the 23rd, I assume that was meant to be the other men's semifinal. I believe there may be other errors of this kind there as well because I thought I counted too many women's prelim games and not enough men's prelim games, but we will see I guess.18abruce (talk) 11:47, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Russian national team linking

[edit]

A new user stated that the OAR does not represent the Russian national team and that it is incorrect linking in the tournament and qualification pages. First I would say that they are in fact the national teams in the view of the IIHF so linking the team there is correct. If winning a medal the IOC will not let it be attributed to Russia, so that is problematic. To be certain, we will have to wait until ranking data is viewable; if team OAR achieves ranking points for Russia, that would be conclusive I believe.18abruce (talk) 02:29, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do they even award ranking points for the olympics? I thought it was a standalone event.Tvx1 01:47, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The olympics are part of the ranking cycle, it is really what the rankings are for. All nations that participate in Olympic qualfication receive points as well. See the IIHF World Ranking page for complete details.18abruce (talk) 01:51, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well the IOC considers OAR a seperate olympic entity so their achievements are not credited to Russia and neither should they link to Russia.Tvx1 01:55, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Except that their achievements will be credited to the Russian national teams, just as a russian skier cannot win a medal for their country but can still win a medal for themselves. Rene Fasel has been rather direct about this. There is no precedent so we will have to wait and see on some of the ambiguity. But if their play in this tournament helps the Russians qualify for the next olympics, it is quite plainly their achievement.18abruce (talk) 02:02, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We don’t know whether those achievements will be awarded to the Russian teams. In fact, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen at all. The OAR olympic delegation came into existence for a reason.Tvx1 02:08, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is the NOC that is suspended, not the team. You didn't even know what the rankings were or how the sport worked a few minutes ago, and now you apparently have an informed opinion on it. Please read this article for how the applicable governing body views it. The IIHF endorses it as being the Russian national team there is no doubt.18abruce (talk) 02:18, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
All Fasel says it that is still a Russian team of sorts and that the fans will support them as if they officially entered as Russia. He makes no mention of awarding of ranking points. And I strongly doubt that the IOC will award anything to Russia.Tvx1 21:26, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Another example is biathlon: Russian athletes will still score Nations cup points for russia for the season, by competing in the olympics. Having a IOC sanction does not change the identification of the participant.18abruce (talk) 02:29, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This report from the official olympic site that should be helpfull: competitor list with rankings.18abruce (talk) 23:09, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not a competitor list at all. Just a 2017 world ranking. Nothing strange about Russia appearing there.Tvx1 15:51, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NHL not participating?

[edit]

There is a passage on this article detailing the NHL not participating at the olympics and why. I really don’t understand what this is supposed to tell us. As far as I can see, there is no event for national hockey leagues. So what where they expected to enter in the first place? Or is the passage trying to say that the US team is not entering?Tvx1 01:53, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is meant to tell us that the best players in the world are not available for the olympics because the NHL is not releasing its players to play. They made up the bulk of the rosters for the past five olympics so it has a major impact on the tournament.18abruce (talk) 01:58, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then why not call a spade a spade and actually state that NHL would not make its players available for the olympics, instead of using confusing wording which makes it look like the NHL were actually scheduled to enter an event?Tvx1 02:04, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Roster sizes

[edit]

The participating nations sections claims that the maximum size of the rosters of the women's teams is 23. Yet the roster of the lone Korea team is listed as containing 35 players. How is that possible?Tvx1 21:36, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
