Angelina Jordan - I'd Rather Go Blind Angelina Jordan - circa 2019, age 13, just prior to her Autumn appearance in the 2019 AGT CHAMPIONS - aired January 2020 where she received a Golden Buzzer upon singing Bohemian Rhapsody, the huge QUEEN hit :: Angelina has brilliantly covered Etta James e.g. "At Last" previously i.e aged 7, 8, &C.) :: No Artist is more qualified vocally, as the linked rendition proves. :: :: A virtual performance of I'd Rather Go Blind., Angelina Jordan duet with Chris Stapleton, may be enjoyed here :: :: Now I'm The Fool is Angelina's latest single offering - from her E.P. Old Enough, and takes the Soul genre to a new level of excellence. At 17 years of Age Angelina - a gifted Jazz natural with a superb vocal range, possessing an incredible gift for capturing the essence of a song, there are few, if any contemporary singers as gifted and or with as much potential. Since winning Norway's Got Talent - at 7 going on 8 years of age (2014) Angelina has - year in, year out, delivered top quality covers of some of the all time great Artists - past and present, and also published and performed several of her own compositions... Now I'm The Fool being a useful example of her musical genius. \\:: — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.192.90.244 (talk) 21:36, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

X Factor

[edit]

The X Factor covers are throwaway covers for the show, they don't deserve a place on this article; a song being covered on a show doesn't illustrate its historical significance, nor does it say anything really. If I said, 'Peter Andre read Stalin's memoirs and found them interesting', would you publish it on either ones entry? No, you certainly wouldn't. I've removed that part of this article for said reasons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.51.75.72 (talk) 22:32, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing of my X factor removals totally unfounded

[edit]

In response to Kevin12xd for undoing my entry @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:I%27d_Rather_Go_Blind

As a student of musicology, I feel X factor covers of pieces do not accurately represent music in place or time. They are accurate representations of the show itself, but not the music that is performed, which are normally standards taken from the British/American songbooks. Rather, the article of the song should discuss the musical or extra-musical implications of the realised, recorded and released versions of the song. There's nothing remotely interesting or even relevant about a certain candidate in a talent show covering a certain song, it is totally unnecessary in a encyclopaedic report of information. This is particularly offensive considering the paramount importance of 'I'd Rather Go Blind' as a song.

Additional to my argument, I'd like to suggest that if we acknowledged every cover a singer on these talent shows had done we'd have this data clogging up song articles in abundance. On average these entries have about 27, meaningless words acknowledging the cover, there have been 8 series of X Factor UK, 7 series of American Idol, 2 series of X factor USA, 2 series of the voice USA, and countless more from shows like the voice of Holland, pop idol, etc. Anyway, going on those examples alone, that's 19 series, with an average of 12 finalists on each, singing for about 10 weeks. Meaning we would have thousands of these annoying little lines of 'this unsuccessful candidate sang this song in week x', clogging up the articles. All of these combined would also be around 8x bigger than the singers' short subentries on the site, which is obviously superfluous. This does not derive from any sort of contempt for these shows, (in fact, I enjoy both X factor and American idol), but it stems from a belief that Wikipedia and music articles deserve to be sophisticated and relevant.

Removing my entry without any intellectual discussion as to why it 'wasn't constructive' is also incredibly obnoxious. If you wish to re-do my work for me then I'd appreciate it, if you disagree with what I've stated then your judgement is certainly misguided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.51.75.72 (talkcontribs) 23:01, 27 October 2012‎

Claims

[edit]

Removed from article, 12 November 2013:

I am Billy Foster and I need to bring to light about the creation of ( I,d Rather Go Blind) I met Ellington Jordon (Fugi) in Soladad State Prison in 1960 I was there because of a probation violation spurred by my antisocial behavior. Due to the fact that I was a professional R&B singer who recorded with Vernon Green and The Medallions on the LA based Dootone lable,I was introduced to Fuji and we would spend some time singing and playing songs we had writtin .Fuji had sang and played (I.d Rather Go Blind) which at that time it was titled (I,d Rather Be a Blindman) Me and Fuji sang on the Talent shows in the institution.I was released in 1962 after being transfered to Chino State Detention Center in Narco California where I graduated from High school and received a certicate in Book Keeping and accounting. I met Etta In 1963 who at the time was heavy into herion addiction I took a genuine interest in her and promoted her on a show I produced at the San Bernadino Civic Auditorium.A few week later I gave Etta a choice to either get clean or I would not deal with her , by this time I was acting as her manager and advancing her money for her drug use. A few days later Lacrica Church ,where she was staying with informed me that Etta was in LA County General Hospital in Detox Ward. I went to see her and she was beautiful ,skin was clear eyes were hazel brown and our love affair started. She was staying with Lacrica Church who was wife of Eugine Church who recorded (Jack of All Trades) and(Pretty Girls) which was a hit back in th day. After She got clean I was contaced by Lenord and Phil Chess after Fuji sent me a cassette tape of (I,d Rather be a Blind Man) to them . Before I knew it we were on a plane on our way to Muscle Sholes to record with Rick Hall.On the night before we recorded (Tell Mama) ,which was (Tell Daddy) which was writtin and recorded by (Clarence Carter), Rick Told me to re-write the lyrics to(Tell Daddy) and (I,d Rather be a Blind Man) which I stayed up late that night changing the lyrics to fit a female .(I.d Rather be a Blind Man) was not that hard just a lines and tags were changed ,however (Tell Daddy) complete verses had to be re written. The next morning I gave the rewritten lyrics after runnin them by Etta . Rick appeared pleased with the lyrics and the rest was history.

In Etta,s book( Rage to Survive) Etta claims to have went to Chino to visit Fuji prior to the recording date and sat down with him and she had imput into creating the song THIS IS TOTTALY UNTRUE.FIRST OF ALL DURING THAT TIME FUGI WAS IN SOLEDAD AND IF HE WAS IN CHINO ETTA COULD NOT AQUIRE A VISITING DUE TO HER CRIMINAL AND ADDICTION STATUS.I never rebuked this situation because If Etta felt that close to the song to say she co authored the song I just let it slide to appease the situation I gave our son (Donto James) 1/2 of my share of the writers credit thats been since 1985 until present.

I just want the TRUTH TO BE KNOWN BEFORE MY DEMISE. I know this account as it relates to these facts can be confirmed by SONG WRITER AND SINGER (FUGI, ELLINGTON JORDAN) PRODUCER and FAME RECORD LABLE OWNER(RICK HALL) CHESS RECORD EXECUTIVES (PHIL and MARSHELL CHESS)They might recall this saga of events

I,m not interested in discrediting Etta I am greatful for me experince with her and that exciting part in my life Our son Donto is planning to keep her lagacy going .

I SWEAR ON MY MOTHERS GRAVE AND MY GOD GIVIN 34 YEARS CLEAN AND SOBER THAT ALL ABOVE IS TRUE Billy Foster [email address removed][

My view is that, though this is fascinating to those of us who love the song, it's inappropriate to include it in the article simply because (unlike Etta James' claims) it hasn't (so far as I know) been published in an independent source (though I realise that it could be claimed that Etta James' autobiography isn't independent). Similarity

[edit]

Is it just me, or does this one sound a lot like the Chris Stapleton's later 'Smooth as Tennessee Whisky' song? (See also David Allen Coe 1981, and George Jones 1983) 2001:56A:F03F:5200:E84E:222E:CC84:CF93 (talk) 06:42, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey shares the bassline, but it's about as common as 12 bar blues. Xalorous (talk) 17:58, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

what about sam cooke's "a change is gonna come"?! that's all i hear when etta sings this! 2601:19C:5280:5BA7:A58D:A9B9:8013:6F85 (talk) 08:42, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Trixie Whitley Suggestion

[edit]

The Black Dub (Trixie Whitley vocals) song titled I'd Rather Go Blind, while awesome, is not related to this song. So unless there is a separate song that is an actual cover, Trixie Whitley should not be listed here in 'Other Versions'. Xalorous (talk) 17:58, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
