Alternative names
[edit]User:Zanhe was right to stop by and ask for sourcing on the glosses for Hu Yan's alternative names, although it's important to gloss purely descriptive names like courtesy and posthumous names when possible. It seems like 季 and 犯 should only have their standard meanings, given that he was apparently the "younger brother" of Chong'er's mother and that his most important scene apart from the victory over Chu was his (over)dramatic apology for his "faults", but it is right that there might be other explanations, such as a transliteration out of whatever the Di were speaking. Nienhauser went ahead and translated the "uncle" bit and Theobald the "minister of works" part. Kindly add more sources for the rest when glosses or theories about them appear in the scholarship. — LlywelynII 04:49, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
DOB & DOD
[edit]Both Baidu Baike and Baike.com (although admittedly, the latter is probably just copying the former) have Hu Yan's life as running from 715—629 BC. Theobald has 622 BC but that's what the Chinese wiki has as the date of his son's death. The Chinese encyclopedias are presumably right here and Theobald mistaken, but I can't find a RS online that has those dates for this guy. Anyone? Found one. — LlywelynII 01:41, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Sources for future article expansion
[edit]More in Liu Guanwen's book, although Google only provides snippet views. Here's what I could get
although perhaps searching for related names, terms, and dates could make it display the rest of the article from another computer. — LlywelynII 01:41, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
