English "to"
[edit]Section Etymology included the following sentence:
- Literally, hoʻo is a particle used to make an actualizing verb from the following noun, as would "to" before a noun in English.
This is patently incorrect, e.g. (the prefixed asterisk is linguistic notation for an incorrect form):
- *to car
- *to temperature
- *to cat
- *to lamp
- *to banana
are not verbs. Some such derived verbs do exist, but the process is by no means automatic like suffixing "-ing" to form the present participle of a verb. I have deleted the bolded text.
