According to the MOD's official defence statistics glossary (link on article page) and BR 8373 [Naval] Officers' Career Regulations, the naval servcice consists of RN and RM. The other services are not even military so are really unlikely to be included in a military service. In addition, an MOD glossary exists specifically to define such terms. This is also the definition on the template. There is only one (supposed, improperly cited) source for the alternative defintion of a military-and-civilian Naval Service, which is an inadequate counter-argument. You cannot seriously believe that a glossary on a MOD webpage is more authoritative than The Queen's Regulations for the Royal Navy (formerly known as Queen's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions for the Government of Her Majesty's Naval Service (QR&AI))! Even your citation from BR8373 is contradicted by the glossary in BR1806, and both are in any case inferior in authority to QRRN.

Unless you can find a source with more authority than QRRN, may I suggest that you leave this article well alone? Andrew Yong 11:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Despite the references here and at the Royal Navy page, QRRN explicitly states that the Royal Fleet Auxiliary is NOT part of the Naval Service. It does so in the first paragraph! This is the exact section:

"0101. Composition of the Naval Service 1. The Naval Service comprises the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, QARNNS, Reserve Forces and Naval Careers Service. The Naval Service is supported by a range of organisations (including external agencies and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary) which are largely civilian manned. The latter organisations do not form part of the Naval Service, but where they contain personnel of the Royal Navy those personnel individually form part of the Naval Service. They are all governed by the Admiralty Board of the Defence Council."

Legally speaking there is no way that the RFA can be part of the Naval Service (as distinct from UK Naval Services) as it is formally part of the Merchant Navy. This is one of the reasons why RFA hulls are not included in Fleet numbers. There have been partisans on this on various pages on wiki for some time, but now the RN has made QRRN available online it is easy to prove. I won't bother editing the pages because last time I did some hero changed them all back; in any event, it just means that the Wiki entries on the Naval Service are wholly inaccurate 188.31.90.111 (talk) 22:48, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
