Montgomery Campbell
[edit]Bishop Henry's correct surname was Montgomery Campbell, not Campbell. He is still fondly remembered by many people in the Church of England - infact there is a portrait of him in Lambeth Palace - and he was never known as Henry Campbell. It would be good to change the title of the article to reflect this. ixo (talk) 20:05, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Although the archives of The Times support the statement made above, other respected newpapers called him "Dr Campbell". Either way, what is certain is that he was known as "Montgomery Campbell", whether the "Montgomery" was part of a double-barrel or was a given name; he was never called "Henry Campbell". I propose, therefore, to move the article to "Henry Montgomery Campbell" unless anyone has objections. It could do with a thorough overhaul, too, which I will undertake when time permits. He deserves better than the present scrappy much-tagged article. Tim riley talk 13:36, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
- This excessively modest bishop doesn't even have a ODNB article, which is astonishing considering the nonentities that do. Every other recent B of L who's dead gets one. It may be hard work putting together a reasonable biography, but if any relevant material comes to light from my modest clerical library, I'll be sure to let you know. - I've done a bit more digging into whether the surname was indeed double-barrelled. It is pretty clear that it was: the list of the bishop's family members published in The Times after his memorial service names his son as Hugh Montgomery Campbell, his unmarried daughter as Jane Montgomery Campbell, and his granddaughter as Elisabeth Montgomery Campbell. Other family members listed were Colonel A. Montgomery Campbell and Miss A. Montgomery Campbell. I've footnoted this in the article, and add it here too, by way of corroborative detail. A Noted Wit
[edit]Henry was a noted wit, and I did hear once that someone was trying to collect his witticisms. It would be great to source some of them. ixo (talk) 20:22, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I suppose we could pause here for the one about Montgomery Campbell and the primly earnest curate: "I never slept with my wife before we were married, did you, my Lord?" "I don't know. What was her maiden name?". But, as usual, citation to a WP:RS is proving elusive. Tim riley talk 15:18, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
