Deletion

[edit]

I know I'm going to get flak about this, so here it is: I'm deleting those entries that aren't specifically called "X (something)", and/or are not commonly called by those names. Planet X does not qualify for disambiguation, because someone searching for "Planet X" is not going to type in "X". In fact, the only one I can see that is a valid term in the science section is the chromosome link. ALTON .ıl 01:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We seem to have ended up in the curious situation that the roman numeral X isn't listed under X in this encyclopedia, possibly because there is no article about Roman_Numeral_X. Is it a dictionary item instead? Maybe we could create a page titled "Other common uses of X"? Ideas?

I believe that this was a page about X, long before it was a disambig page. NevilleDNZ 11:14, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Songs

[edit]

Not all songs are notable. There are easily 100 songs or more named "X"—we don't want to put all these here since the majority are not notable. I routinely clean-out non-notable songs from disambiguation pages to keep the disambiguation page useful for their intended purpose. If the song is notable (either a single, popular airplay, covered by other artists, etc.) then it should certainly appear here. +mt 02:31, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree with this strategy for this page because it tends to get overlong. On shorter dab lists, the notability wouldn't be as big an issue. Notability is generally established in the articles, not on dab pages. SlackerMom (talk) 12:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to policy and the DAB project there is no limitation to the articles that can be listed, otherwise the disambiguation fails to perform its function. Every single active page on Wikipedia that has a similar name should be listed. If the list is too long then less likely entries should be scrutinized, but in the case of a song that's called "X", and doesn't go by anything else, it's not really a debate it should be listed. If the article is not notable then put it up for AfD. When the link turns red remove it from the list. Of course we're not going to list every single song called "X", just the ones with articles whether they're featured articles or stubs with notability tags.  æron phone home  14:44, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I have to reverse my earlier opinion and say I agree with you. Long pages will always require greater scrutiny, but it's been my practice to include song titles from album pages even if they don't have their own articles. SlackerMom (talk) 15:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll respect that there is no limitation to what can be listed on a DAB page, so we'll keep the item here for now. However, as I stated previously, there is no article for the song, nor do I anticipate one to be created (it appears to be just another 1:58 track off the album). And, of course, I would never remove it if there was an article for the song (I often prepare red-links to songs with potential notability to encourage them to be started). +mt 01:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The disambiguation page manual explains that these index-type-pages only cover exact matches of the page-title. Hence, we have a completely separate and unrelated page for X-ray (disambiguation) (and X Factor, etc). :) -- Quiddity (talk) 22:20, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
