Lead description

[edit]

@Bkonrad: There is nothing wrong with the destination article. It is objectively wrong to state here,"Global warming, or climate change,..." because that phrasing implies that global warming and climate change are interchangeable. They are not interchangeable. I've just made corrective edits to the substantive description, and tried to adhere to formal formatting issues here as well. —RCraig09 (talk) 15:31, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your update is OK other than using a piped link rather than the redirect, which I've fixed. olderwiser 16:04, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Global warming should have it's own entry and not redirect to climate change

[edit]

At the time of writing the first sentence of this page states "Global warming is the ongoing increase in global average temperature that is causing climate change." This is a clear indication that global warming and climate change are related but not the same thing, and should not therefore be treated as a single conceptual item.

(The current human induced) Global warming is a forcing function creating a range of effects that can be summarised under the heading of "climate change". Having the inability to link to a wikipedia entry for global warming is the equivalent of not being able to link to pigs, just ham ("Pigs (disambiguation) - Pigs are the underlying animal that gives rise to ham").

The wikipedia article on sea level rise for example lists a link to an IPCC paper about the primary cause of sea level rise, and then gives climate change as the reason (and links to the Wikipedia page on climate change). The IPCC paper however identifies that the cause of sea level rise is global warming (primarily via ice melt and warming expansion). Going to and reading the IPCC link makes this clear, however for those just trying to navigate around Wikipedia links, using the one to climate change is incredibly confusing as it appears that the sea level rise Wikipedia article is identifying an effect (climate change) as the cause for another effect (sea level rise). Unfortunately, without an entry in Wikipedia to link to that explains what global warming is, there is no ability to correct this poor entry. 2401:D002:740A:5900:710B:E3E4:CA0C:EEAB (talk) 12:36, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since this is essentially a question about splitting article content and not about disambiguation, the topic would be better discussed at Talk:Climate change. olderwiser 15:40, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There were excruciatingly long discussions at Talk:Climate change before the GW article was renamed as (moved to) CC: the concepts are distinct but for practical purposes here, the concepts are inseparable. Agreed that this location is not the best for discussion, but as an aside, there is some controversy about whether GW is a part of CC or a distinct cause of CC (see chart at right). —RCraig09 (talk) 15:52, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
