Tons. is "Tons register" (unladen weight). "Tons burthen" (fully loaded), may be twice as much.

Both of these ships were used Australia <-> New Zealand, 1855

The schooner is in Lloyd's Register for 1845.

last masterpiece?

Whoever wrote that sentence about how Gil Blas 'is considered the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre' pulled the idea out of his hat, considering the fact that neither Smollett nor Fielding had yet written anything.
