Antiquated

[edit]

"In 1855 the Maori war interrupted the progress of civilisation and Christianity among the natives, and caused an almost universal apostasy."

The terminology here is entirely antiquated. The so-called "Maori war" is now known as the Land Wars, or - among revisionist historians - the New Zealand Wars. Talk of the progress of "civilisation" would raise eyebrows among New Zealand historians, who know that the spread of European culture and Christianity was only tangentially related to acceptance of de facto British sovereignty. The New Zealand Maori have not been called "natives" in any reputable history since the 1960s, and "apostasy" may be an appropriate term to apply to the infamous Emperor Julian, but it is hardly applicable to the inherently syncretistic mixture of traditional animism and Christian spirituality that invigorated tribal Maori in the 19th century. In fact, I struggle to— find anything about this sentence that isn't offensive. Even the date looks suspiciously exact. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.220.10 (talkcontribs) 19:22, 13 November 2007

Cambridge and Lichfield

[edit]

I think this article is better than start class, and I'm glad to have learned about this missionary bishop who seems to have inspired at least two other missionaries honored on calendars within the Anglican communion. It would also be interesting to see whether Bishop Selwyn inspired other Welsh (Lichfield) or English (Cambridge) explorers or missionaries in his final years. BTW, I didn't change the citation needed note in the "Final Years" section, but suspect that either his own health or that of someone in his family caused this bishop Selwyn to accept the Lichfield position.Jweaver28 (talk) 19:40, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
