Place name?

[edit]

Can someone explain why the article clearly states that this hamlet was "named in 1912 after Dr. Williams Morrison McKay" and the photo of the sign (presumably at the border of the hamlet) clearly says "McKay"... yet this article and all reference to it elsewhere says "Fort MacKay"? 76.21.81.159 (talk) 15:07, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fort MacKay is the official name of the hamlet according to the Regional Municipality (R.M.) of Wood Buffalo[1] and Alberta Municipal Affairs.[2] StatCan recognizes both.[3] A search at the CGNDB also recognizes usage of both.[4] Based on all the links above, it appears that the name Fort McKay applies to the Indian reserve, whereas Fort MacKay applies to the the hamlet and Indian settlement (different than the Indian reserve).
Now I recognize that this doesn't answer your question specifically, but I hope it confirms that both are in use in this area. You may be able to get your answer by contacting the R.M. of Wood Buffalo directly. I note that the R.M. of Wood Buffalo's webpage on Fort MacKay confirms that Fort MacKay was named after Dr. McKay, but does not elaborate on the reason for the different spelling.
As for the photo for the welcome sign, I can only speculate that it is the welcome sign for the Indian reserve and not the hamlet. The sign itself does not outright confirm if the sign belongs to the Indian reserve or the R.M. of Wood Buffalo. Hwy43 (talk) 19:13, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Last week Wood Buffalo officially changed its spelling to McKay. See [5] and [6]. Cobblet (talk) 00:04, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. And finally resolved. Sounds like a move is in order for this article. Hwy43 (talk) 10:50, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fort MacKayFort McKay – The municipality Fort McKay is part of has officially changed the spelling of the town's name to reflect established local usage demonstrated in other contexts such as Fort McKay First Nation. See the municipality's webpage on the town, [7] and [8]. Cobblet (talk) 18:12, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
