Naming issues
[edit]Shouldn't this be titled "Taiwanese Army" instead? I don't think the Japanese made a distinction between "Formosa" and "Taiwan", but English does and the latter is the correct modern form.
- if we are talking about 台灣軍 here, i think it should be "Taiwan Garrison." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kc0616 (talk • contribs) 21:52, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
The military unit in question was an Imperial Japanese Army unit, and was called "Taiwan gun" or "Taiwan Army" in Japanese. The term "Formosa" was never used by the Japanese in this context. Some, but by no means all, contemporary (war-time) English-language sources did use the term "Formosa Army" or "Japanese forces on Formosa"; but others used "Taiwan Army". In this context, I believe that a direct translation of the actual unit title is more appropriate, unless consensus dictates otherwise. --MChew (talk) 02:47, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
