Spelling
[edit]Most of the Croatian sites I look at spell it Konšćak (with c-acute; 182 hits) which seems to be the ordinary hr. spelling, but with older names it may be hard to tell. It's not encouraging that the majority of Google hits for Konščak (with c-caron; 65 hits, 6 in Croatian) are en.Wikipedia & its mirrors. Are we more accurate to start with, or have the Croatians got it right? —Muke Tever 15:36, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I don't know for sure, but Konšćak would be more shtokavian and Konščak would be more kajkavian. The former is official, but the person is from an area where the latter dialect is spoken, so it's a tough call :)
- I was recently somewhat surprised to see that a neighbourhood of Zagreb is officially written Medvešćak rather than Medveščak, which I thought was the native version.
- It's possible that the standard language has morphed these "-shchack" suffixes, but it's also possible that the local dialect wouldn't require distinguishing the "ch" sounds into two different letters and doesn't mind. (Slovene, which is related, doesn't distinguish.)
- BTW I doubt we'll get an answer from the creator of the page, it's a peculiar anonymous editor who I've never seen write anything on a Talk page. --Joy [shallot] 16:25, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
