Article lacks information

[edit]

It has been brought up before on the talk page as well that the page lacks information regarding the poetic works of Faiz. In particular, I think the article can benefit from a bibliography section as well as some details about the poetic works. There is almost no information about the publication history of Faiz's poetry. If someone else is not up to it, I can start a section. However I don't think I have enough experience in editing these kind of articles so it will take some time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aarsalankhalid (talkcontribs) 12:24, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

INCOMPLETE ARTICLE

[edit]

There's a lot of information about Faiz missing in this article. Of perticular importance is his poetry: the development, the style, the periods, influences of time and era, representations: e.g. representation of revolution as a mistress, liberation struggles, etc. etc. Moreover, much more needs to be added about his education, life and general biography. Three very important events in his life which profoundly effected his poetry: the two imprisonments and self-exile are not mentioned at all. I request the contributors to complete this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.209.119.184 (talk) 21:43, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Other Issues I guess I just don't buy into pre-1947 British India being identified as "India". Sialkot was, if anything, in the British Indian Empire. Especially since India clearly is an entry on the Republic of India.

The point about the line/tradition of Ghalib, Iqbal, etc. is that a lot of students of the language and literature do overtly define a line; namely of one almost transcendent poet active at a time, with one being born and/or in his youth during the period of activity of the previous. It goes something like this: Faiz, Iqbal, Ghalib, Mir, Sauda (I think), Wali. Thus tradition, while appropriate doesn't provide a full picture. Though line might imply a direct link, familial or otherwise. I guess we will have to put a note on this topic at some point.--iFaqeer 04:29, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

Sialkot and all these places, all these states, were part of India for centuries before the British came to India. The have been under various rules... in Hindu, Buddhist, Mughal and British eras what's the common term to all? India. It's as simple as that. --LordSuryaofShropshire 18:08, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)
Your latest edit (pre-indy indy) seems fine. --LordSuryaofShropshire 19:17, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

anti-semitic much? faiz was never in the running for a nobel...his poetry was brilliant but who knew him outside the muslim/indian worlds...the reason he never one would more likely be the absence of any decent european translations of his work and hardly the zionist element in the nobel committee...there were no Jews on it at that time.

While it's true that his poetry in translation was not well known, it was well translated in English by Keirnan during his lifetime. The reason could be simpler: as Fiaz did not seek publicity, so his friends in the West, like him, did not court publicity. The style of Socialism to which Faiz, Keirnan and his numerous friends ascribed was more "Sufi" in the sense that the men were beyond ego; courting publicity was hardly their style. What I wonder about though, is that Faiz, despite having lived in Lebanon, is not translated into Arabic. He was a personal and trusted friend of Arafat, and of many of his contemporary Arab poets and writers, including Adonis, Ghasan Kanafani, etc. he is not well known among Arabs. This is a right pity. I think his very humble personality has some part to play in this also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.209.119.202 (talk) 21:29, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikification of this article

[edit]

I think there is a lot of room for improvement relating to the formatting and readability of the article. I am currently practicing Wikitext and Wiki format conventions. Meanwhile, if somebody else is in a better position to improve this article, please help by providing guidelines and/or suggestions.

I am willing to help because I think there are also some factual mistakes, even though many sources on the net are available on the subject. --bandishhh

The name of the poet in Urdu appears incorrectly in the actual article but when I went in to edit the page it showed up correctly in the underlying hypertext. Does any one know why that is?

Nobel Prize in Poetry??

[edit]

There is no Nobel Prize in Poetry. It can be Nobel Prize in Literature at the most! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.175.18.199 (talk) 18:40, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fabrications

[edit]

I have been looking over the internet to find any reliable neutral source calling Faiz as a Muslim. In fact many books in Google refer to him as an agnostic. I have made the changes to the "Irreligion" section and am adding the sources. If anyone wants to discuss it with me, please do! I would like to make it clear on the article. Religious Views

[edit]

"While Faiz was brought up as an orthodox Muslim, he saw himself as an agnostic. Estelle Dryland writes that although Faiz took his place within an Islamic community, undoubtedly, he was a professed agnostic.[9] Faiz was a secularist, liberal, socialist and pacifist.[10] During his trial, when to the Prosecutor-General, Faiz famously quipped: "Don’t you know applying ‘"Fragrance"' is Sunnah?...". The questioner protested and said: "My dear sir, I doubt if you are a great one for following the Sunnah and so on!", then Faiz replied: "Why not, I am also a part of the Islamic culture..."."

The above is the current section under "Religious Views" which breaks multiple Wikipedia guidelines:

"Wikipedia's verifiability guidelines require all information to be citable to sources. When information is unsourced, and it is doubtful any sources are available for the information, it can be boldly removed."

"Information not attributed to a reliable source that is inaccurate beyond a reasonable doubt should be removed immediately. Unless it is clearly a blatant hoax, good faith shall be assumed and no action shall be taken against the editor who added this information, since that editor may have been given misinformation him/herself, or otherwise misunderstood."

"Information that clearly has no relevance to the subject named in the article should be removed. For example, if in the article tiger you find one or more paragraphs about light bulbs, and there is no explanation from the text as to why this is there, it should be removed. If the text does appear to belong in another article, it can and probably should be moved there. If the information has some connection to the article, but it is not significantly relevant (e.g., a recently added paragraph on England in the article on English literature), you may wish to move the content to the Talk page with a note explaining why you have relocated it."

- Sentence #1 is uncited which according the first guideline is absolutely not a problem to remove. - Sentence #2's reference does not contain cited material and can be removed as well. - Sentence #3 has a reference that is not accessible. - Sentence #4 and #5 go against the third guideline listed above and can be removed as well.

I have added this content that has been wrongly removed:

"Faiz was from a Muslim background but maintained a non-practicing lifestyle throughout his life. Although seen as an atheist by his communist circle of friends, it was famously reported that "just a few hours before he fell ill never to recover, he had led prayers. Yes, a comrade who many believed was an atheist was not just praying to Allah to show him the right path but also leading the prayers![1]

This addition does not go against any of the Wikipedia guidelines and cannot be removed without a good reason. Please discuss this issue here.
