Trophy finalists getting byes to round 1 of the FA Cup.........?

[edit]

I was having a look at the Encyclopedia of British Football, published in 1983, and it states that (at the time) the previous season's Trophy finalists got byes to the first round of the FA Cup. I'd never heard of this - anyone know if it was actually true, how long it lasted for, and id it worth mentioning in the article............? ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:32, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was definitely true - it was a carry over from when the Amateur Cup finalists were exempt (not strictly speaking "byes") to the First Round Proper. Two other non-league clubs were also exempt to the First Round, based on something like "past performances". I think it ended when all the Conference Clubs began to be exempt until the Fourth Round Qualifying - something like 1988 at a guess? - fchd (talk) 21:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is some comfusion in this article. The first paragraph mentions 'the FA Vase'. Then, under 'History' and 'Format' all references are to the FA Trophy, until suddenly in the last paragraph under 'Format', first 'the Vase competition' and then both 'the FA Umbro Vase' and 'FA Carlsberg Vase' are mentioned. Are these competitions the same, and are they identical to the FA Trophy that the article is supposed to be about? To me, this is not exactly clear. Also everything mentioned under 'Venues' is repetition from the introductory and the 'Format' chapters; I believe leaving out the entire 'Venues' chapter would make the article more readable. The references to the FA Vase under "Format" were an error, which I have now corrected. The only other reference to the Vase is where it states that clubs in some leagues play in the Trophy whereas those from lower leagues play in the Vase rather than the Trophy (I've clarified the wording of this ever so slightly.....) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 19:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of all competitions

[edit]

I added a list of all the competitions, as a section. It seems nice and compact, with the short item names, so I don't think it needs to be a separate page - at least for the next 30-40 years. Any disagreement? Onanoff (talk) 17:37, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
