Reproduction of the article?
[edit]The revision by User:Knaggs on 19 November 2004[[1]] appears to be a reproduction of the article: 'Gibbons, (Edward) Stanley' in the Dictionary of National Biography. Although the first DNB was started in the late-nineteenth century, the article on Stanley Gibbons first appeared in the 1993 update, and was revised in the 2004 edition. It is still, therefore, a copyrighted text. For this reason I've reverted the article.
As well as having very similar structures and overall content, there are several paraphrases:
"At this time stamp collecting was becoming popular and, in 1856, he started trading in stamps from his father’s shop. In 1863 he bought two sacks of Cape of Good Hope triangular stamps for £5 from two sailors who had won them in a raffle in Cape Town, and is alleged to have made £500 profit on the deal." - Wikipedia
"Already interested in the new hobby of stamp collecting, he started to trade in stamps in 1856 from a desk in his father's shop... he bought two sacks of Cape of Good Hope triangular stamps for £5 from two sailors who had won them in a raffle in Cape Town. He later claimed to have made £500 on the deal." - DNB
The citation for the DNB article that I'm talking about is: G. E. Dixon, ‘Gibbons, (Edward) Stanley (1840–1913)’, rev., Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004 [2]'. Members of a public library in the UK should be able to have online access, as should most members of a university (via Athens).
Original research
[edit]Unfortunately, (as it is all very interesting) most of this article appears to be original research and thus a breach of wiki policy. I have pruned a lot of unnecessary stuff but realise a lot of what is left is still OR. If published, reliable sources can be listed then it can all stay but if not it really shouldn't be here. There are several mentions of newspaper articles - these would be perfect for proper citations, so if someone has the details, please add them.
Things a person has found in archives count as primary sources and these should only be used in limited circumstances. I have moved Gibbons' poem found at the Society of Genealogists here to preserve it in case a published source is available (although, sadly thats doubtful). It prob shouldn't be in the article without a citation as its totally unverifiable.
Poem
[edit]>>>>A poem was found in the Society of Genealogists archives written by Gibbons, titled ‘Acrostic to Maggie’:
- Maggie, dearest, if you but only knew,
- All the true love and affection I bear to you
- Great is my desire again to be home
- Greater is it in the Albert Bar to roam
- In there do I behold the woman I love – yea adore
- Eager am I my Sentiments to express more.
- Could I but fly from this deserted place.
- And never again behold thy dear angelic face,
- Say only that the love I bear you is ardently returned,
- Satisfied will I be then your love from you I’ve earned;
- Ever will my affection be for you so true;
- Yea, and nothing but death shall part us two.<<<<
Have also left a message on the talkpage of the person who added the bulk of the text in the hope they can provide some decent sources. Sassf (talk) 20:53, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
