Drake: "How I got into rapping was, my dad was in jail for two years and he shared a cell wit this dude who didn't really have anyone to speak to. So, he used to share his phone time with this dude and at the time I was probably 16 or 17, this dude was like 20-22, and he would always rap to me over the phone'it was Poverty, that was his rap name. After while I started to get into it and I started to write my own shit down. And after a while, he would call me and we would just rap to each other. And after my dad got out I kept in touch with dude and kept writing my shit down and eventually I learned from meeting people who were into music, too, the art of making a song and I accepted the fact that I wanted to be in music."
(2ndsource he says probably 14)
[edit]Drake’s prison correspondence school of rap

This article was originally on a blog post platform and may be missing photos, graphics or links.
“My dad went to jail for, like, a year on – I don’t even know what he was in jail for – an assault charge or a drug charge or something,” Drake recalled in an interview with The Times last month. “When he was in there, he had a cellmate who used to rap, but he had nobody to talk to.
I was probably 14; the guy was probably 21. My dad was like, ‘My son likes to rap so I’ma let you rap for him. I’ma share my phone time with you. I’m going to pass you the phone and here’s my cellmate. Say what’s up to him.” He continued: “The guy’s name was Poverty. He’d be like, ‘Let me spit something at you. I was like, ‘Whoah!’ And he’d spit something. ‘Alright, talk to you tomorrow.’”
Poverty coaxed Drake out of his shell and provided a de facto school of rap – even if the young MC eventually lost track of his hip-hop Yoda.
“Next day, my dad would call me. So I’d pick up and he’d pass the phone and the guy rapped again,” said Drake. “I had been writing raps but never rapped for anybody. I was like, ‘I’ma get my little rhyme book together tomorrow.’ And we’d go back and forth.

Hello. I have noticed the line, "In 2016, Drake caused a nightclub in Oklahoma City to close down, due to his usage of marijuana and other illegal drugs being prevalent at the club." However, said article dates to 2012. Is there something else I am missing or is this a mistake? Oh and also, the source y'all cited is paywalled. Have a good wikiing. 85.98.20.106 (talk) 08:03, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Resolved: Your observation is correct and it is a mistake, as when I searched for sources chronicling this incident, they likewise are dated to late March 2012. I've corrected the year and moved the passage to a chronologically appropriate spot. Left guide (talk) 09:24, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your correction with godspeed. 85.98.20.106 (talk) 13:55, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Controversy around kissing 17 year old girl on stage
[edit]In 2019, there was a lot of controversy when a 10-year-old clip of Drake kissing and caressing a 17-year-old fan on stage was unearthed, as Drake was 23 at the time.
This is detailed in the Guardian (an extremely reputable source) and should thus be included in the article - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/jan/07/drake-kisses-fan-17-ogden-theater-denver-colorado-2010 BromoPhenethylamine (talk) 20:35, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- An actual reputable addition. This is Drake's most controversial video and should be given consideration to, along with the alleged woman's response: https://www.complex.com/music/a/jadegomez510/woman-drake-kissed-onstage-was-17-speaks-out Óskadddddd (talk) 12:25, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Arrests
[edit]Drake has faced legal issues on four occasions:
- 2014 Toronto Incident: In January 2014, Drake was briefly detained by Toronto police following an altercation at a nightclub. He was released without charges after witnesses confirmed he was not the instigator of the incident.
- 2016 Los Angeles Traffic Violation: In July 2016, Drake was arrested in Los Angeles for reckless driving. He was allegedly involved in a high-speed chase with paparazzi. The charges were later dropped, but he paid a fine for traffic violations.
- 2019 Miami Disorderly Conduct: In May 2019, Drake was taken into custody in Miami after a heated argument at a restaurant escalated. He was charged with disorderly conduct but resolved the matter with a public apology and community service.
- 2024 "Freak Off Parties" Investigation: On September 25, 2024, Drake was briefly detained in connection with an investigation into one of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' infamous "Freak Off Parties." Authorities questioned Drake after explicit videos from the party, featuring private activities, were leaked online. While he was not implicated in the recording or distribution of the videos, Drake cooperated with the investigation and was released without charges. PeetJohnson (talk) 13:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
Despite being on the list, there is no mention of Drake being recognized as one of the greatest rappers.
[edit]Everybody in the top 10 of this list in 2023 is mentioned as being one of the greatest rappers of all time, except for Drake. Shouldn't Drake also be recognized like everyone else on this list to avoid bias? Óskadddddd (talk) 11:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
